Skyhawks close out trip with third straight win
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (March 13, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, closed out its spring break schedule with a 6-3 victory over Upper Iowa University in non-conference women's tennis action at Sanlando Park today.
Stonehill, which took a pair of points by default, took the win by winning one doubles match and three singles matches on the courts. Sophomores Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian), the tenth-ranked doubles team in the East Region by the ITA, gave the Skyhawks a 2-1 edge after doubles play with their 8-1 win at No. 1.
Junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over freshman Victoria Kulbokas (Hickory Hills, Ill./Amos Alonzo Stagg) for Stonehill. Sophomore Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) registered a 6-0, 6-2 win over freshman Kelly Jachymowski (Lino Lake, Minn./Centennial) at No. 4 singles, while senior Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 decision over junior Laura Alvarez (Zion, Ill./Zion Benton) at No. 5.
Freshman Isis Verweij (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and sophomore Saki Kawabata (Osaka, Japan) posted singles wins for Upper Iowa. Verweij defeated Toegemann, ranked 20th in the East Region, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, while Kawabata defeated Paradiso 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2. Kawabata was a double-winner for the Peacocks, adding an 8-5 decision at No. 2 doubles with Jachymowski over Kump and Martin.
Stonehill (11-2, 5-0 NE-10) is off until next Thursday, March 20, when it hosts Assumption College at 3 p.m. Upper Iowa (7-6, 5-3 NSIC) will face the University of South Dakota tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
