Stonehill Singles Out Aquinas, 5-4


Sophomore Analise Kump posted wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles to help lead the Skyhawks to a comeback win over Aquinas.

Kump and Martin lead Skyhawks to victory 

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 12, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, overcame a 2-1 deficit after doubles play by winning four singles matches to claim a 5-4 triumph over Aquinas (Mich.) College in non-conference women's tennis action at Lake Cane Tennis Center this evening.

Senior captain Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) and sophomore Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) led Stonehill to its second straight win as double-winners. The combined for the Skyhawks lone doubles point with an 8-0 sweep at No. 2 doubles. Kump followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles over sophomore Marjeanne Bothma (Rockford, Mich./Rockford), while Martin cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over junior Gina Kukulski (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) at No. 5.

Sophomore Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) and junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) also added singles wins to help complete Stonehill's comeback after dropping two of three doubles matches. Paradiso defeated junior Ariana Kabodian (Mercy, Mich.) 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while Lawrence defeated freshman Tiffany Tuori (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.

Senior Lauren Ramey (Martin, Mich./Kalamazoo Hackett), ranked 34th in the ITA NAIA national rankings, was a double-winner for Aquinas. She combined with Tuori for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Paradiso and sophomore Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School). Ramey added a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles against Toegemann, ranked 20th in the ITA NCAA Division II East Regional rankings.

Kabodian and Bothma notched a point for Aquinas with their 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, while sophomore Jannelle Miller (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) chipped in with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles for the Saints.

Stonehill (10-2, 5-0 NE-10) closes out its spring break schedule tomorrow when it faces Upper Iowa University at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs at 11:30 a.m. The Skyhawks next home match is Thursday, March 20, when they host Assumption College at 3 p.m. Aquinas (6-3) takes on Southeastern Florida on Thursday.
