Toegemann and Paradiso lead Skyhawks double winners
ORLANDO, Fla. (March 9, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, opened its spring schedule with a commanding 9-0 sweep of Saint Ambrose University of Davenport, Iowa, in non-conference women's tennis action at Fort Gatlin Tennis Center tonight.
Sophomores Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) led Stonehill's six double-winners in the match. The tenth-ranked doubles pairing in the East Region, by the ITA, opened with an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Toegemann, ranked 20th in the East Region singles rankings, followed with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Saint Ambrose senior Heather Matejka (Johnson, Ill./Johnsburg). Paradiso added a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 2 over sophomore Olivia Lofgren (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City).
Senior captain Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) and sophomore Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) teamed up for an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Kump then swept junior Samantha Rochkus (Frankford, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, while Martin claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 over freshman Amanda Aronson (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew).
Junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and classmate Olivia Schneider (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) combined for an 8-0 sweep at No. 3 doubles. Lawrence then breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over junior Allie DeRoo (Moline, Ill./Alleman Catholic), while Schneider topped junior Karissa Kalous (Fairfax, Iowa/Iowa City West) 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
Stonehill (8-1, 5-0 NE-10) is right back in action on Monday when it battles Palm Beach Atlantic University at Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla., at 8 a.m. The Skyhawks next home match is Thursday, March 20, when they host Assumption College at 3 p.m. Saint Ambrose (8-7) faces Aquinas College tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
