Holy Cross Defeats Stonehill, 6-1

Paradiso a double-winner for Skyhawks against Division I Crusaders

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 1, 2013) – The College of the Holy Cross won five of six singles matches after taking the doubles point to record a 6-1 victory over Stonehill College, ranked fifth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, in non-conference women's tennis action at Sinnott Family Tennis Center this afternoon.

Freshman Virginia Peck-Philips (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./St. Andrew's) led three double-winners for Division I Holy Cross in the win. She posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles over Stonehill sophomore Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School), the 15th-ranked singles player in the East Region by the ITA. Peck-Philips also combined with junior Taylor Stathis (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Dominican Academy) for an 8-0 shutout at No. 1 doubles as the Crusaders won two of three doubles matches to claim the one doubles point under Division I scoring rules.

Senior Molly Montgomery (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) and sophomore Jaclyn Carroll (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic) also posted a pair of wins on the afternoon, starting by teaming up for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Carroll added a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Stonehill junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy), while Montgomery rallied for a 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 triumph over sophomore Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) at No. 4.

Freshman Marielle Newell (Saint Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) and sophomore Cassy Deng (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) also picked up singles points for Holy Cross. Newell topped Stonehill senior Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-4, while Deng battled past freshman Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colo./D'Evelyn) 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 6.

Sophomore Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian), ranked 12th in the ITA East Region singles rankings, was a double-winner for Stonehill. She combined with freshman Amanda DePasquale (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) for an 8-5 win over Newell and Deng at No. 3 doubles before holding off Stathis 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 10-7 at No. 2 singles.

Stonehill (3-1, 1-0 NE-10) is back in action on Thursday when it visits the University of New Haven for a Northeast-10 matchup at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks next home match is next Wednesday, October 9, against The College of Saint Rose at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. Holy Cross (5-3, 0-0 Patriot League) hosts Simmons College on Sunday at noon.
