Stonehill Breezes Past Franklin Pierce in Fall Opener, 9-0


Sophomore Bailey Paradiso didn't drop a game in three sets of play in singles and doubles action today at Franklin Pierce.

Skyhawks open fall and NE-10 schedule with road win

RINDGE, N.H. (September 17, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked fifth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, opened its fall schedule with a 9-0 shutout of Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action this afternoon.

Stonehill dropped only nine games all match, just six in ten singles sets, on its way to victory. Senior Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway), junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and sophomores Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School), Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) and Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) were all double-winners for the Skyhawks.

Toegemann, the 15th-ranked singles player in the East Region, posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles over Franklin Pierce senior Natasha McCarthy (Rindge, N.H./Conant) after combining with Martin for an 8-1 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Martin coasted to an 8-0 pro-set win at No. 5 singles over sophomore Nicole Gilooly (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich).

Paradiso, ranked 12th in the region, breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over sophomore Kirby Melbourne (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./The Grauer School) after teaming up with freshman Amanda DePasquale (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Lawrence and Kump combined for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles and then Lawrence followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles over junior Emily Parrett (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan). Kump added a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of junior Leslie Rodgers (Westminster, Md./Westminster) at No. 4 singles. Freshman Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colo./D'Evelyn) made her collegiate debut, along with DePasquale, and rolled to an 8-0 win at No. 6 singles over junior Christine Boulanger (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton).

Stonehill (1-0, 1-0 NE-10) is back in action on Friday for a key non-conference clash at Holy Family University, ranked tenth in the East Region, at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks first home match of the season is scheduled for Thursday, September 26, when they host Post University at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. Franklin Pierce (0-2, 0-2 NE-10) travels to Curry College for a non-conference match on Sunday at noon.
