Denyes and Gilligan post singles victories for Skyhawks
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 14, 2012) – The University of Indianapolis, ranked ninth in the ITA Division II Midwest Regional rankings, posted a 6-3 victory over Stonehill College, ranked seventh in the ITA East Region rankings, in non-conference women's tennis action at Oak Street Park today.
Sophomore Kasey Land (Jasper, Ind./Jasper) was a double-winner to lead Indianapolis to the victory. She combined with freshman Brooke Boyts (Goshen, Ind./Fairfield) for an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles and then claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Stonehill junior Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading).
Indianapolis won two of the three doubles matches and then closed out the win with victories in four of six singles matches. Senior Alena Perez-Majul (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), the 18th-ranked singles player in the Midwest region, rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 triumph over Stonehill senior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) at No. 1 singles. Senior Meghan Teunis (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic) and freshman Kelsey Matthews (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) also notched singles wins for the Greyhounds.
Junior Jennifer Denyes (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephens Episcopal) and freshman Katie Gilligan (Wakefield, R.I./The Prout School) posted singles victories for Stonehill. Denyes claimed a 6-3, 6-1 victory over senior Maggie Ashby (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) at No. 2 singles, while Gilligan topped sophomore Taylor Eckert (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) at No. 6.
Senior Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) and junior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) also combined for an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles for the Skyhawks.
Stonehill (4-3, 4-0 NE-10) returns to action on Thursday when it faces Minnesota State University Moorhead at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla., at 8 a.m. Indianapolis (5-4, 0-0 GLVC) faces Saint Michael's College tomorrow at 3 p.m.
