Stonehill Blanks New Haven 9-0 in Home Opener

Skyhawks extend perfect record in conference play

EASTON, Mass. (March 27, 2011) – Stonehill College, currently ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional poll, swept their second Northeast-10 Conference match of the weekend with a 9-0 home victory over the University of New Haven this afternoon.

Senior Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional), juniors Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan), and freshman Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) each picked up wins at singles and doubles as the Skyhawks kicked off their home schedule with a win and improved their conference record to 5-0.

White and Martin each cruised to 6-0, 6-0 singles victories, White in the No. 3 slot and Martin at No. 5, and combined for an 8-1 victory over New Haven's Lauren Lyons (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and Amanda Foley (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) at No. 2 doubles. The duo currently hold a 5-0 record in NE-10 doubles competition, and a 15-1 overall mark. Herchel and sophomore Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) topped the Chargers 8-0 in the No. 1 doubles slot, and Toegemann and sophomore Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) were 8-0 winners at No. 3.

Sophomore Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) also claimed a straight-sets 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, and junior Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) remains unbeatable at No. 6 as she dropped Nan Sirihorachi (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North) 6-1, 6-0 for her 38th consecutive singles victory.

Stonehill (9-1, 5-0 NE-10) hits the road for a pair of matches next weekend, visiting Saint Michael's College on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and Assumption College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
