Women’s Soccer Hosts Assumption in NE10 Quarterfinal Match

Skyhawks and Greyhounds set to face off for the second time this season

EASTON, Mass. (October 29, 2018) – The third-seeded Stonehill College women's soccer team will host sixth-seeded Assumption College tomorrow night, Tuesday, October 30 at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer tournament at W.B. Mason Stadium. 

Stonehill (13-5, 10-4 NE10) is making its return to the NE10 Tournament following a one-year absence. The Skyhawks' last appearance came in 2016, when Stonehill defeated the No. 6 seeded Pace University for the program's third NE10 Championship. Stonehill is 6-3 all-time in NE10 quarterfinal action, advancing to nine semifinals and four finals, while winning titles in 1993, 1995, and 2016. This is the second time that Stonehill has hosted an NE10 Tournament match since 1999.

The Skyhawks have also reached East Regional rankings with both the United Soccer Coaches and the NCAA Division II, with its highest ranking of No. 6 in both this season.

Assumption (9-6-2, 8-4-2 NE10) has had their share of appearances in the NE10 Tournament, as they have appeared in nine semifinals and five finals, where they have been unable to clinch an NE10 Title. The Greyhounds appeared in last years' NE10 quarterfinal where they defeated the College of Saint Rose, 3-0, and moved on to a draw with Southern New Hampshire University, 1-1, with the Penmen advancing on penalty kicks, 5-4.  

Tomorrow night's match will be the second meeting this fall between Stonehill and Assumption. In the third week of the season, the Skyhawks hosted the Greyhounds on Skyhawk Field, falling 3-2 in double overtime. For Stonehill, freshman Camryn Thompson tallied her fourth goal of the season with assist from Courtney Campo  and Nicole Garfield  notched her second goal of the season with a helper from Elizabeth Nerger. For the Greyhounds, Ania Spina and Diana Bruggeman helped tie up the game, as Kallie Villemaire scored the game winning goal in the 106th minute.

Stonehill opened its 2018 campaign with a 4-0-0 record in its first four games, including four-straight shutouts, its best start since the 2016 season, when the Skyhawks won six-straight games. After seeing a 5-4-0 record in September, Stonehill kicked off October with seven-straight wins. This was the longest run for the program since the 1999 team when it won 13-straight games kicking off the beginning of the season and finishing with a 17-4 record overall and an 8-1 mark in Conference play.

Freshman Thompson and sophomore Kayla Henry have been the offensive catalysts this season for Stonehill, as they lead the team and ranked fourth and tied for 11th in the NE10 with 24 and 18 points, respectively. The Lincoln, Rhode Island native has started in 15 of the 18 games she has played in and has registered points in 13 of the 18 games. She scored two goals in a 2-0 victory over Saint Rose for her most points in a game and went on a five-game streak recording points. Thompson is also currently tied for the Stonehill record for points in a rookie season, with Carolyn Cooney '04 and Shelly Christie '05. Henry has stepped up after only tallying five points her freshman year, chipping in six goals and six assists for 18 total points, for second on the team. Henry also went on a five-game point streak where she combined for four goals and three assists. Both have chipped in two game-winning goals this season and have been explosive attackers for the Skyhawks.

The Skyhawks also have two others with double-digit points, including Nerger and Garfield. Nerger has posted 13 total points this season, a career high, scoring four goals and five assists with two game-winning goals. Garfield has chipped in four goals during her sophomore season at midfield, as she has also tallied two assists for a 10-point total.

In the back, Stonehill has seen a combined effort of senior Emily Scollard, juniors Emily Rosano and Isabella Collentro, and sophomore Tess Erwin. Along with goalkeeper Kaitlin Brown, the defensive force has held opponents to 1.16 goals per game.

In net, junior Brown is third in the Conference spending time in the net, while she is first in wins (13) and shutouts (8), third in saves (90), eighth in goals against average (1.17) and save percentage (.818), and 15th in goals against (20). Brown is currently tied for fifth with Kathleen Neff '99 and Kelly McLaughlin '92 in shutouts.

Stonehill ranks in the top 85 of nine categories throughout the nation including tied for 31st in total assists (32), tied for 39th in assists per game (1.78), 51st in total points (100), 55th in win-lost-tied percentage (0.722), tied for 58th in shutout percentage (0.444), tied for 59th in total goals (34), 62nd in points per game (5.56), 74th in save percentage (0.822), and tied for 81st in scoring offense (1.89).

Assumption has totaled six shutouts this season and has held opponents to 1.30 goals per game, while scoring 1.82 goals per game. They have played in four overtime battles, where they have a record of 2-0-2 this season, and saw three-straight games with wins against the University of New Haven, Le Moyne College, and American International College.

Kallie Villemaire leads the Greyhounds with 13 goals and a career-high four assists for 30 points this season. The senior is first in goals (13) and second in points (30) in the Conference. The Greyhounds also have two others with double-digit points, including seniors Jessica FitzGerald and Ania Spina. FitzGerald saw a career-high 13 points this season with four goals and five assists, while Spina has totaled three goals and four assists for 10 points.

Junior Alexis Nason has seen the most time in net for the Greyhounds as she is ranked sixth in the NE10 in time, first in saves (113), fifth in save percentage (.831), sixth in wins (8), 12th in goals against average (1.47), and 18th in goals against (23).

Assumption is ranked in the top 90 of eight categories including 33rd in saves per game (7.29), 36th in save percentage (0.844), 66th in total assists (25), 83rd in total points (87), 88th in points per game (5.12), and 89th in scoring offense (1.82) and total goals (31). 

The winner of tomorrow night's match will advance to Friday's semifinal round to take on the winner of No. 7 Southern Connecticut State University versus No. 2 Southern New Hampshire University contest. The Owls earned the seventh seed with its 8-6 overall record and 9-9 league mark with 24 points, while the Penmen finished the regular season at 13-3-2 overall and 10-2-2 in conference play with 32 points, good for the second-place seed.
