Geraghty tallied a goal and an assist in Skyhawk's' fifth shutout of season

EASTON, Massachusetts (October 10, 2018) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team, ranked No. 8 in the United Soccer Coaches' East Regional Poll, recorded their fifth shutout of the season and third-straight victory with a 3-0 victory over Northeast-10 Conference foe Merrimack College on Wednesday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.

Stonehill (9-4-0, 6-4-0 NE10) saw Nicole GeraghtyCamryn Thompsonand Nicole Garfield tally the goals, while Geraghty and Kayla Henry recorded the assists. Kaitlin Brown registered six saves in her seventh shutout of her career.

Merrimack took the ball down to their attacking third early in the game for the first shot of the contest by Taylor Cogliano that was saved by Brown at 1:07. Stonehill then took the ball down to their attacking third and tallied two corner kicks that were punched out by the Warriors. The Skyhawks put the ball back in the box as Thompson headed the ball into the keeper's hands but she was unable to hold on to it and Garfield put the rebound back in for a blocked shot.

The Skyhawks connected in the 23rd minute of the game as Geraghty played the ball around defenders inside the 18-yard box putting the ball past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 advantage, her second goal of the season, eighth in her career. Four minutes later, Stonehill extended its lead to two, as Geraghty tipped the ball to Thompson who found the back right post for her seventh goal of the season at 26:53, 2-0. Merrimack tried to attack the net late in the first half, but Stonehill continued bringing the ball up and closed the half with four shots, including three on net.


Garfield chips in her fourth goal of the season and ninth of her career

After a corner kick and a shot by the Skyhawks at the start of the second half, Stonehill connected on another opportunity in the box, as Henry sent a cross from the left side to Garfield who was in the middle of the box for a strike to the back of the net, putting Stonehill up three, 3-0 at 48:12. Merrimack was not done fighting as they registered 10 shots in the second half, to the Skyhawks' five, but the Warriors were fended off by Stonehill's strong defensive line for their fifth shutout of the season.

Stonehill outshot Merrimack 12-9 in the first half, as the Warriors held the shot advantage in the second half 10-5.

The Skyhawks will travel to Garden City, New Jersey to battle NE10 Conference foe Adelphi University, who is ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches' East Regional Poll on Saturday, October 13 with a start time of 3:00 p.m.

During the month of October, the women's soccer team will be wearing pink to honor anyone who is affected by breast cancer supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Skyhawks will be selling pink bracelets and t-shirts during their Play4TheCure contest on Saturday, October 20th at 11:00 a.m. on Skyhawk Field against Saint Michael's College.
