Women’s Soccer Shuts Out NYIT, 3-0

Nerger scores twice to give Stonehill its second shutout of the season

Garfield scored her first goal of the season, sixth of her career

OLD WESTBURY, New York (September 1, 2018) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team collected its second shutout of the season, 3-0, against New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) on Saturday afternoon at President's Stadium in non-conference play.

Stonehill (2-0) saw Elizabeth Nerger (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) tally two goals, while Nicole Garfield (Manchester, Connecticut/East Catholic) registered one of her own. Nerger assisted in Garfield's goal, as Camryn Thompson (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) picked up a helper for Nerger's first goal.

The Skyhawks attempted to get on the board early, as Garfield tried to send a laser to the net, but was stopped by the Bear's defense for the first shot of the game in the third minute. Stonehill then followed with two corners and two more shots, one which was sent wide and the other was stopped at the line by a Bear's defender. After some substitutions midway through the first half, Thompson found the feet of Nerger, who spun and lifted the ball over the goalkeeper's head at 29:41 for a 1-0 lead. Stonehill saw three more shots before the end of the first half, as the Bears saw one from Jess Hawley in the 38th minute.

Stonehill was quick on the attack in the second half and six minutes after the start of the frame, the Skyhawks extended its lead to two, 2-0 with a tally in the 52nd minute by Garfield. Nerger sent a pass to Garfield who corralled the ball, turned and scored for her first goal of the season and sixth of her career. A minute and eight seconds later, Nerger ripped a shot at the keeper, who was able to stop it, but the junior collected the rebound and put the ball in the back of the net for her second goal of the game and sixth of her career at 52:47.

NYIT was able to get four shots off in the second half, but the Skyhawk's defense fended off the Bear's from putting a tally on the board and giving junior goalkeeper Kaitlin Brown (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) her second win of the season and her eighth of her career.

Stonehill hosts non-conference foe Molloy College on Thursday, September 6 at 3:00 p.m. for its home opener on Skyhawk Field.
