Women’s Soccer Blanks Saint Michael’s, 2-0

Fernbach tallies her first goal of the season

COLCHESTER, Vt. (October 22, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team recorded its third shutout of the year against Saint Michael's College in a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon on Duffy Field.

Stonehill's (7-10-0, 5-8-0 NE10) Madalyn Fernbach (Plainview, New York/Plainview JFK) tallied the goal for the Skyhawks, while Taylor Shannahan (Mendham,New Jersey/Morris Catholic) registered the assist. The game winner came from a Saint Michael's own goal and sophomore Kaitlin Brown (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) made four stops.

Saint Michael's (3-9-2, 2-9-1 NE10) saw goalkeeper Megan LeCours record two saves, as the Purple Knights outshot the Skyhawks 12-7.

Both teams were only able to get one corner kick a piece, as Saint Michael's was the only team to get a shot off. The shot from Emily Durette was stopped by Stonehill's defender, Emily Scollard (Lynnfield, Massachusetts/Lynnfield) who cleared the ball off the left post.

The Skyhawks tallied another team save from Isabella Collentro (Sandwich, Massachusetts/Sandwich), also at the left post from a shot by the Purple Knights' Alex Matteo in the 57th minute.

Stonehill put a tally on the board, as a cross into the 18-yard box was defended by Saint Michael's but instead was sent to the lower left corner by the Purple Knights for a Skyhawk 1-0 lead in the 67th minute.

Saint Michael's came close to scoring the equalizer in the 70th minute with a corner kick from Abby Pelon, which found teammate Andie Devaney. But, Brown made a diving stop to keep the Purple Knights scoreless.

In the 83rd minute, LeCours stopped a strike from Elizabeth Nerger (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) from going across the line and Stonehill kept possession to extend the lead to two, 2-0, in the 84th minute with a free kick form the left side by Shannahan that found the cleat of Fernbach for a shot at the right post which sailed past the keeper.

Stonehill hosts Bentley University for its final home match of the season on Wednesday, October 25 3:00 p.m. for its Play 4 The Cure Game. Throughout the month of October, the team will be wearing pink during warm-ups in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Any donations at the game will be directed towards the National Foundation for Cancer Research.  Donations are accepted online and at the game.
