Henry Leads Women’s Soccer in 2-1 Win Over AIC

Freshman Henry records her first- and second-collegiate goals in victory

EASTON, Mass. (October 19, 2017)- In a rematch of the 2016 NCAA Division II first round match, Stonehill College women's soccer topped American International College, 2-1, on Thursday afternoon on Skyhawk Field.

Stonehill (6-10-0, 4-8-0 NE10) saw freshman Kayla Henry (Belchertown, Massachusetts/Belchertown) recorded her first two collegiate goals of her career, while senior Meredith Moore (Salem, Connecticut/East Lyme) assisted the first goal and freshman Nicole Garfield (Manchester, Connecticut/East Catholic) tallied the helper in the second goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Brown (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) notched five saves in the victory.

American International College (3-6-2, 4-7-4 NE10) saw Jocylyn Deome register the goal, while Alanna Gracia and notched the helper. Mikayla Demanche recorded four saves in the loss.

With a slow start to the first half, Stonehill picked up the first corner kick of the game, but was defended by American International for them to take it down the field for the first shot of the game by Linnea Herbertsson and stopped by Brown.

The Skyhawks then picked up the intensity, as Courtney Campo (Quincy, Massachusetts/North Quincy) tallied two shots on goal and Elizabeth Nerger (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) struck the ball into a defender for three shots in 30 seconds. The Yellow Jackets controlled the ball after the block and took it to their attacking third for two shots of their own, including one on goal and one sent wide.

With a throw in, in the Skyhawks' attacking third, Moore sent in a low cross from the right channel to Henry who touches it around a defender to put it in the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage in the 27th minute.

Just about seven minutes later, Henry registered her second-career goal. Garfield lofted the ball over the top and Henry collected the loose ball for a chip that bounced over the line to the back left post for a two-goal advantage, 2-0, in the 34th minute.

American International took control in the 52nd minute of the game, as Gracia crossed the ball from 25 yards out in the right channel to the top of the 18-yard box. Hackett tipped the ball to Deome who sent it to the back of the net just past Brown's outstretched hands, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1.

The rest of the second half included the Skyhawks containing the Yellow Jackets to midfield and the defense keeping American International from putting any shots on net. Stonehill was able to get the ball to their attacking third a few times, as the Skyhawks recorded six shots to the Yellow Jackets' nine, totaling 16 shots for each team by the end of regulation.
