Saint Anselm Slips Past Women’s Soccer, 1-0

Stonehill tallied 11 shots in the loss

EASTON, Mass. (October 17, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team came up short against Saint Anselm College, 1-0, in a Tuesday afternoon Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Skyhawk Field.

Stonehill's (5-10-0, 3-8-0 NE10) sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Brown (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) recorded six saves.

Saint Anselm (5-7-1, 3-7-1 NE10) saw Alexis Elowitch score her first goal of the season, while goalkeeper Payton Wildrick tallied five saves.

Both teams were able to tally two corner kicks a piece in the first 14 minutes of the game, but neither resulted in a shot.

At 20:12 in the first half, Elizabeth Nerger (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) recorded the Skyhawks first shot of the game, which was blocked from the right side of the field. Nerger was able to recover the ball after Saint Anselm tried taking it back down the field and drove the ball back to the net just hitting the crossbar at 21:18.

With a back and forth first half, neither team was able to hold possession very long, Stonehill held a slight advantage in shots, 4-3, at the end of the frame.

In the early minutes of the second half, the Hawks caused a scramble in front of the net, as Elowitch ripped a shot off a defender, which ended up just over the line for 1-0 at 50:07.

Stonehill pressured Saint Anselm for the rest of the game, getting off seven shots. Of the two corner kicks that the Skyhawks had in the second half, Stonehill was able to set up a shot right after each, but Saint Anselm held off the attacks. The Hawks did not shy from extending its' lead by outshooting the Skyhawks with 11 total shots, but Stonehill kept its deficit to one, 0-1.

Stonehill hosts American International College on Thursday, October 19 at 3:00 p.m. for its Purple and White Game on Skyhawk Field. Throughout the month of October, the team will be wearing pink during warm-ups in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They will also be hosting a Play 4 the Cure game on Wednesday, October 25 against Bentley University at 3:00 p.m. to benefit the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Donations are accepted online and at the game.
