Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 10 Adelphi, 2-1, in Double Overtime

Stonehill honored its four seniors prior to the game

EASTON, Mass. (October  14, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team forced No. 10 Adelphi University into double overtime, but the Panthers came up on top, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon on Skyhawk Field.

Prior to the game, Stonehill College honored its four seniors of the class of 2018 including, Lindsay Gomes (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton), Meredith Moore (Salem, Connecticut/East Lyme), Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic), and Julia Galdorisi (Northport, New York/Kings Park).

Stonehill's (5-9-0, 3-7-0 NE10) freshman Alex Giardina (Middletown, Connecticut/Middletown) tallied her fifth goal of the season in the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Brown (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) registered nine saves in the loss.

Adelphi's (12-0-0, 10-0-0 NE10) Kerianna Scorce tallied the first goal with an assist from Savannah Taylor, while Taylor recorded the game-winning goal in the second overtime.

With a very physical first half, Adelphi outshot Stonehill 9-4 and got one corner kick off before the Panthers scored in the 20th minute of the game. Scorce collected the ball inside the 18-yard box on the right side and drove the ball to the left side of the net.

Stonehill found the back of the net as well soon after Adelphi, as Giardina tallied her fifth goal of the season. Courtney Campo (Quincy, Massachusetts/North Quincy) took the ball up the middle of the field and sent it to Giardina who dribbled and beat her defender, ripping it past the goalkeeper in the 28th minute of the game.

Stonehill and Adelphi continuing pressuring each other, as the Panthers totaled four shots before the end of the half, compared to the Skyhawks' three.

The Panthers started off the second half with a  shot in the 50th minute of the game, but Brown was able to catch the soft shot. Adelphi continued with an inswinger corner kick, which was followed by another shot, but the Skyhawks blocked the ball.

Stonehill responded with a header in the 57th minute by Giardina about 10 yards out in the left channel from Elizabeth Nerger's (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) corner kick. Adelphi defense stepped into the box to stop the shot.

Stonehill and Adelphi each recorded a shot before the end of regulation. The Panther's was from Alexis Weiser which hit the cross bar from 18 yards out and the Skyhawks saw Moore send one from the upper left corner of the 18-yard box for a catch save by the goalkeeper.

In the second overtime, the two teams once again fought back and forth for possession and had a chance in the 109th minute of the game with a corner kick. But, the Skyhawks' defense was able to clear the inswinger. A minute later, Adelphi brought the ball back up the field to their attacking third, as the ball was dropped to Taylor who struck the ball from just outside the 18-yard box to the back left post for a 2-1 finish.
