Nerger scored her first-season goal
EASTON, Mass. (October 7, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team picked up its first Northeast-10 Conference and second-season shutout, 2-0 against Southern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon on Skyhawk Field.
For Stonehill (5-7-0, 3-5-0 NE10) sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Brown (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) recorded four saves in the victory. Sophomore Elizabeth Nerger (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) and freshman Alex Giardina (Middletown, Connecticut/Middletown) tallied the goals for the Skyhawks, as Emily Rosano (Cohasset, Massachusetts/Cohasset), Nicole Garfield (Manchester, Connecticut/East Catholic), and Nicole Geraghty (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) picked up the assists.
Southern Connecticut saw (2-8-2, 2-5-2 NE10) Gabrielle Arruda record seven saves.
Stonehill got off two shots to Southern Connecticut's one in the first 14 minutes of play. The Skyhawks were then able to capitalize on a pass from Rosano on the left side of the field to Nerger, who was about 25 yards out to put the ball away in the back right post for a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of the game.
Southern Connecticut was one shot short of tying Stonehill at the half, as the Skyhawks held a 6-5 shot advantage.
The second half opened up with two shots by the Skyhawks, with one from Nerger at the 50th minute, saved by Arruda, and the other from junior Courtney Campo (Quincy, Massachusetts/Quincy) in the 52nd minute that missed wide. The Owls followed up with one shot of their own and a corner kick, but Stonehill's defensive line cleared the ball in the 56th minute. Nine minutes later, the Skyhawks held the ball in their attacking third, and was able to connect on a couple of solid passes for a 2-0 advantage.
Garfield tipped the ball to Geraghty on the right side of the net, who passed it to Giardina in front of the net for her second goal of the season at 64:16.
Stonehill and Southern Connecticut both recorded nine shots a piece in the second half, but the Skyhawks out shot the Owls by one, 15-14, with 9-4 shots on goal.
Stonehill travels to Merrimack College on Wednesday, October 11 for a 7:00 p.m. NE10 conference matchup. Throughout the month of October, the team will be wearing pink during warm-ups in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They will also be hosting a Play 4 the Cure game on Wednesday, October 25 against Bentley University at 3:00 p.m. to benefit the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Donations are accepted online and at the game.
