Women’s Soccer Unable to Overcome Early Deficit in 3-1 Loss to No. 7 LIU Post

Garfield records her third-career goal

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (September 18, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team was unable to get on top, as No. 7 LIU Post defeated the Skyhawks, 3-1, Monday afternoon at Pioneer Soccer Field. 

Stonehill's (3-4-0, 1-2-0 NE10) Nicole Garfield (Manchester, Connecticut/East Catholic) scored the Skyhawks' lone goal, as Kaitlin Brown (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) tallied a career-high 10 saves.

No. 7 LIU Post (5-1-0, 0-0-0 ECC) saw Gabrielle Clark register two goals, while Andrea Huntzinger notched the third goal for the Pioneers. Alice Schonfeldt and Huntzinger recorded the assists.

LIU Post took two corner kicks in first seven minutes of the game and recorded four shots on goal. In the Skyhawks' defensive third, the Pioneers dominated play and fed a corner kick to Sarah McGarry in the seventh minute of the game for a header that was blocked by Stonehill. Clark collected the rebound and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers recorded two more corner kicks before Clark scored her second goal of the game off another corner kick and a scramble in front of the net, in which the ball was struck to the lower right corner, 2-0. Stonehill was outshot by LIU Post 16-7 by the end of the first half.

Stonehill was able to jump on board and cut the deficit to one, 2-1, as Garfield scored in the 66th minute of the game, for her third tally of the season. The freshman connected on a lose ball after a foul on LIU Post and found the lower left corner of the net.

Less than 10 minutes later in the 74th minute, LIU Post put its lead back at two, 3-1, as Huntzinger took the ball up the right side of the field and made a clean strike to the lower left corner. Stonehill tallied two shots in the remaining minutes of the game to total 12 shots, as the Pioneers recorded four shots to add to its 26 shot total.

Stonehill hosts American International College on Wednesday, September 20 for its Purple and White Game with a 4:00 p.m. start time on Skyhawk Field.
