Assumption Holds Off Women’s Soccer, 2-1

Wheaton makes first-career start with seven saves

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 13, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team was unable to get by Assumption College in a 2-1 loss in Multi-Sport Stadium Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Stonehill's (2-3-0, 0-2-0 NE10) sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Wheaton (Dartmouth, Massachusetts/Dartmouth) tallied a career-high seven saves and freshman Nicole Garfield (Manchester, Connecticut/East Catholic) tallied the lone goal for the Skyhawks.

Assumption's (3-0-0, 1-0-0 NE10) Kallie Villemaire and Amanda Arnold tallied the goals for the Greyhounds, as Arnold registered the assist on Villemaire's tally.

Assumption jumped on board early, as Villemaire sent a shot past the keeper in the 12th minute of the game. Arnold found Villemaire in front of the net on the left side and chipped the ball to the back for her seventh goal of the season.

Wheaton made her fifth save of the game off a strike by Johnna Caproruscio in the 44th minute of the game, as both teams continued to battle through the remaining minutes of the half.

The Greyhounds started off the second half with back-to-back corner kicks in the 47th minute and the Skyhawks cleared the ball just past midfield, but Assumption was able to bring the ball back to their offensive third. Arnold dribbled the ball past defenders and struck the ball from the top of the box to clip the underside of the crossbar and bounce into the net for a 2-0 advantage in the 49th minute.

Emily Rosano (Cohasset, Massachusetts/Cohasset) took the free kick for the Skyhawks at the 54th minute from about 35 yards out, as the Greyhounds' keeper Nason caught the ball just in front of the net.

The Skyhawks took the ball to its' offensive third in the 68th minute and Garfield sent the ball to the back of the net for her first-collegiate goal from about 25 yards out, cutting the deficit to one, 1-2.

The Greyhounds tallied three more shots on goal, to the Skyhawks two for the remainder of the game, as Assumption led the game in shots 16 to Stonehill's 15.

Stonehill hosts Le Moyne College on Saturday, September 16 for a NE10 matchup with a start time of noon on Skyhawk Field.
