Women’s Soccer Earns 2-0 Victory Over Saint Rose in NE-10 Quarterfinal Play

Campo and Mancuso record the goals for the Skyhawks

Campo tallies her first-career goal in the victory

EASTON, Mass. (November 1, 2016) – Stonehill College women's soccer team, seeded fourth in the Northeast-10 Conference, defeated The College of Saint Rose, seeded fifth in the NE-10, Tuesday afternoon on Skyhawk Field.

For Stonehill (13-5-1, 9-5-1 NE-10) Courtney Campo (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) and Andrea Mancuso (Highland Hills, N.Y./Cornwall Central) recorded the goals, as Meredith Moore (Salem, Conn./East Lyme) and Caroline Colbert (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veterans) tallied the assists, respectively. As a team, the Skyhawks have picked up their ninth shutout of the season, continuing their most successful season since 1999 when that team finished with a 17-4-0 overall mark.

Saint Rose (11-7-0, 8-7-0 NE-10) saw goalkeeper Madison Taylor record two saves on the four shots on goal by the Skyhawks, while her team tallied seven shots on goal.

The Skyhawks took the first possession of the game controlling the ball in their offensive third and taking advantage of an early opportunity with the help of Moore. The junior sent a cross from the left side to Campo who was in the box with a Golden Knight defender on her back, as she was able to find the back right post for her first-career goal in the second minute. In the 17th minute of the game, Saint Rose's Victoria Barris ripped a bullet from about 25 yards out that sailed towards right underneath the crossbar, but goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) was able to jump and stretch her arm out to send the ball over the crossbar. The remaining minutes of the period were very physical as Saint Rose picked up seven fouls to Stonehill's three.

Block records her ninth shutout of the season, a career high

After the start of the half and in a span of 13 minutes, there were six fouls given out, three to each, giving both teams opportunities to get the ball to their offensive zones. Saint Rose was able to get three shots off in that time, but with only one on goal, keeping the score in favor of the Skyhawks, 1-0.

In the 77th minute of the game, Stonehill capitalized on one of its four shots on goal as Colbert found Mancuso on the left side of the field at the top of the 18-yard box, who was able to launch a direct kick to the back right post extending the lead to two. With 14 minutes remaining, Saint Rose was only able to get off two more shots, as the Skyhawks contained the ball recording its ninth shutout of the year.

Stonehill will face top-seeded Adelphi University on Friday, November 4 at 4 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y. on Motamed Field.
