WALTHAM, Mass. (October 4, 2016) – The No. 4 Stonehill women's soccer team shut out Bentley University, 2-0, Tuesday night.
For Stonehill (10-0-1, 6-0-1 NE-10) Meredith Moore (Salem, Conn./East Lyme) registered her fifth goal of the season, while Lindsay Gomes (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) tallied her second-career goal. This is the best start since 2000 for the Skyhawks.
Bentley University's (5-3-2, 2-3-2 NE-10) goalkeeper Deirdre Macrorie recorded three saves on the five shots on goal by the Skyhawks.
Both teams traded chances in the first 39 minutes of the game before Stonehill was able to connect on an opportunity. After several trips into Bentleys defensive third, the Skyhawks' Moore capitalized in the 40th minute of the match. Sophomore Erin O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) set up for a free kick about 30 yards out after a Bentley foul, sending the ball in front of the net for Moore to score at 39:15. For the remaining five minutes, neither team connected on a shot, giving Stonehill a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Similar to the first half, the second half was very defensive as the Skyhawks totaled eight corner kicks and the Falcons had 10. In the 86th minute of the game, both teams scrambled to gain possession of the ball in front of the net, but the Skyhawks came up on top. Gomes came away with the ball and was successful in finding the back of the net, putting Stonehill up 2-0, with less than five minutes remaining in the game. Bentley was able to squeeze in one more corner kick before time elapsed and was unable to connect, securing the seventh shutout win for the Skyhawks.
Stonehill is back in action on Friday, October 7 as it travels to Manchester, New Hampshire to battle Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Anselm College at 3:30 p.m.
