No. 24 Women’s Soccer Dominant Against Saint Rose, 8-1

Seven different Skyhawk women tally a goal in the 8-1 victory

EASTON, Mass. (September 17, 2016) – The No. 24 Stonehill College women's soccer team took off running with an 8-1 triumph over Northeast-10 Conference foe the College of Saint Rose Saturday afternoon at Skyhawks Field.

Stonehill's (6-0-0, 2-0-0 NE-10) eight goals were scored by seven different Skyhawks, including back-to-back goals from junior Meredith Moore (Salem, Conn./East Lyme) in the first half. Five of the goals were Skyhawk firsts of the season or of their career: junior Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic), senior Hannah Fay (Tolland, Conn./Tolland), senior Andrea Mancuso (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall Central), sophomore Madalyn Fernbach (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK), and freshman Elizabeth Nerger (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield). Senior Lauren Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) tallied her fourth goal of the season and 10th of her career.

Saint Rose's (4-2-0, 1-2-0 NE-10) lone goal was scored by Elisa Galbiati and assisted by Nina Predanic early in the second half.

Out of Stonehill's 19 shots, eight were golden balls putting the Skyhawks in an 8-1 advantage over the Golden Knights' six shots. With not much action in the first 13 minutes of the game, Stonehill finally had an a few opportunities as Nicole Geraghty (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) and Moore tallied the first two shots of the game. After Moore's shot that went wide, Shannahan picked up the loose ball and found the open net nudging it over the goalkeepers head in the 14th minute of the game putting Stonehill up 1-0.

Moore acted quickly after a foul on Saint Rose in its offensive zone in the 18th minute, which enabled goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) a free kick. Sailing it over midfield, Moore tracked the ball and was able to race past her defender to place the ball in the net from the left side of the six-yard box, giving the Skyhawks a 2-0 advantage.

Not much time had passed as Moore was able to connect once more. This time, sophomore Emily Scollard (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) dribbled the ball down the right sideline and crossed it to Moore who took it to the mesh for her second goal of the game and third of the season.

The Skyhawks were not done, as they were able to capitalize on two more plays before the half was over. The first tally was from Fay at the 32 minute who was able to grab the ball from a long corner kick from Shannahan. Fay was able to get the ball past the goalkeeper as the defense misplayed the ball and left her view open. Ten minutes later, Fay and Mancuso were able to cross up the defense, as Fay found Mancuso in front of the goalkeeper who was able to tip the ball in for the Skyhawks fifth goal of the game.

The second half saw Stonehill just as active as it was in the first. Sophomore Meghan Thomasch (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) found an opportunity with Fernbach ahead of her letting Fernbach dribble past defenders for Stonehill's sixth goal of the game at the 49th minute. Saint Rose was able to respond right back as the Golden Knights capitalized on Predanic's corner kick, where Galbiati was able to easily head the ball into the net putting the score at 6-1 in favor of the Skyhawks.

Stonehill put away four shots in seven minutes, which included Nerger's first goal of her career, which was a header from Thomasch in the 68th minute of the game. Play toggled between the two fields as neither team was able to get a shot off for 10 minutes until Stonehill's Kapatoes tipped in a shot from a cross sent from Mancuso in the 78th minute, giving the Skyhawks an 8-1 advantage. Stonehill persisted as the game came to a close, but neither team was able to score a last minute goal.

Stonehill hosts another Northeast-10 foe Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday, September 21 with a 4 p.m. start time.
