Jamie Block makes four saves in net for the Skyhawks
EASTON, Mass. (October 10, 2015) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team fell to Saint Anselm College in overtime, 1-0, in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action Saturday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.
For the second straight game the Skyhawks had opportunities to score, but couldn't find the back of the net. Freshman Courtney Campo (Quincy, Massachusetts/North Quincy) came inches away from giving the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute, when she received the ball in the box, beat a defender and ripped a shot off the far left post.
Saint Anselm junior forward Nicole Rust (Hooksett, New Hampshire/Manchester Central) scored the lone goal of the match in the first overtime for the Hawks. Rust took advantage of a turnover deep in Skyhawk territory, stealing the ball and shooting a low, hard shot to the far left post to score her third goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) made multiple big saves to keep the score tied at zero. In the 73rd minute, Saint Anselm senior midfielder Rachel Gillies (Auburn, Massachusetts/Auburn) headed a cross from the middle of the box towards the net, only for Block to make a leaping save off the crossbar and out of bounds. Block was up to the challenge again in the first overtime, when Hawks senior midfielder Callie Millet (Lancaster Massachusetts/Nashoba) took a free kick from the top of the box, curled the ball over the wall and towards the upper right hand corner of the net. Block's keeper instincts took over as she retreated into the net and timed her jump perfectly to just tip the ball off of the crossbar and out of bounds.
Saint Anselm junior goalkeeper Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Connecticut/East Hartford) made three saves in net, en route to her third shutout of the season.
Stonehill (3-7-2, 2-5-1 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday, October 14th as the Skyhawks travel to The University of New Haven for an NE-10 clash at 4 p.m. The Hawks visit Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
