Sophomore Jamie Block records career-best 11 saves for Skyhawks
WORCESTER, Mass. (November 4, 2014) – Freshman forward Amanda Arnold (Dayton, Maine/Thornton Academy) scored the game-winning goal with 1:08 remaining in the first overtime session to lift the top-seeded Assumption College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over eighth-seeded Stonehill College tonight in Northeast-10 Conference Championship quarterfinal action at Assumption's Multi-Sport Stadium.
With the win, Assumption (14-3-1, 12-2 NE-10) advances to the semifinal round of the NE-10 Championship. The Greyhounds will host fifth-seeded Franklin Pierce University on Friday night.
Stonehill got on the board just under 15 minutes into tonight's contest when junior forward Meagan Elliott (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season with an unassisted strike from 20 yards out.
The Skyhawks held on to their lead for the remainder of the half despite being outshot by a 12-6 margin in the opening 45 minutes. Although Assumption stepped up its offensive pressure in the early part of the second half, the Greyhounds were still unable to break through for an equalizer.
Junior midfielder Paige Radomski (Kingston, Massachusetts/Silver Lake Regional), who racked up 14 shots in the contest, finally brought Assumption level in the 68th minute with her team-best 13th goal of the season. The 2014 NE-10 Player of the Year headed home a corner kick taken by senior midfielder Liz Manganella (Sandwich, Massachusetts/Sandwich) with 22:55 left in regulation.
The Greyhounds had several opportunities to pull ahead in the closing minutes, but Stonehill sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) stood tall, stopping seven of the eight shots that came her way in the second half. Block recorded a career-best 11 overall saves in the contest.
Assumption senior goalkeeper Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, New York/Whitesboro) was impressive as well, turning aside nine of the ten shots that she saw.
With the first overtime session winding down, Arnold, who was named the NE-10 Rookie of the Year earlier today, collected a loose ball in the box and netted the game-winner.
Assumption outshot Stonehill by a 35-14 margin in the game, including a 21-6 edge in the second half. The Greyhounds also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Stonehill ends its 2014 campaign at 8-8-2 overall, with a 6-6-2 mark in NE-10 play.
