Skyhawks score 4+ goals for the third time this season
WALTHAM, Mass. (October 21, 2014) – Senior forward Renee Trudeau (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) scored her first two goals of the season and sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) registered six saves as Stonehill College posted a 4-1 victory over rival Bentley University this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Bentley Field.
After over 40 minutes of scoreless action, Trudeau put the Skyhawks in front before the half when she collected a rebound from junior forward Meagan Elliott's (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) shot on goal and buried it past Bentley freshman goalkeeper Deirdre Macrorie (Winchester, Massachusetts/Winchester).
Stonehill then added two goals in under a four minute span early in the second half to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Senior midfielder Carolyn Moodie (Littleton, Massachusetts/Littleton) got it started at the 54:46 mark, when she fired a shot from 15 yards out into the left corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
Trudeau found the back of the net for the second time in the 59th minute, as she scored again after picking up a loose ball from a rebound. This time, it was junior midfielder Caroline Stone (Mount Vernon, New Hampshire/Souhegan) that provided the shot leading up to Trudeau's second of the afternoon.
Freshman forward Lindsay Gomes (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton) capped Stonehill's three-goal half with the first marker of her collegiate career, as she ended up with the ball after it was deflected into the box and beat Macrorie in the 72nd minute.
Bentley would get one goal back in the closing seconds of the match, as senior midfielder Patty McAllister (South Glastonbury, Connecticut/Glastonbury) chipped a shot past Block following a corner kick for her first goal of the season.
Stonehill and Bentley had 14 shots each in the contest, although the Skyhawks held a 10-5 edge in the second half. The teams were also even with two corner kicks apiece.
Following this afternoon's match, Stonehill (8-5-1, 6-4-1 NE-10) will return home on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. to host the College of Saint Rose, ranked No. 3 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Poll, for Senior Day at Skyhawk Field. Bentley (2-12, 0-11 NE-10) is back in action on Friday afternoon, when the Falcons are set to host Southern Connecticut State University at Bentley Field.
