Sophomore Jamie Block makes three saves for Skyhawks
EASTON, Mass. (October 9, 2014) – Southern New Hampshire University scored early in the first half and held on for a 1-0 victory at Stonehill College, ranked No. 5 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) East Region Poll, this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Skyhawk Field.
Just under 16 minutes into the game, the Penmen struck for the only goal of the contest. Southern New Hampshire sophomore midfielder Alexa Poulin (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) found freshman forward Tia Woodarek (Springville, New York/Springville Griffith) open in the box with a pass from the right side. Woodarek beat Stonehill sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) with a shot to the lower right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
The Skyhawks had several opportunities to get on the board, but they came up empty for the fourth time this season. Sophomore back Claire O'Brien (West Hartford, Connecticut/Hall) hit the crossbar on a free kick from 25 yards out at the 4:04 mark, and 20 seconds later classmate Lauren Kapatoes (Hopedale, Massachusetts/Hopedale) forced Southern New Hampshire sophomore goalkeeper Autumn Scanlon (Waltham, Massachusetts/Waltham) to make one of her three saves.
O'Brien again nearly found the equalizer for the Skyhawks in the 72nd minute, but Scanlon stopped her shot from well outside the box with a diving effort to her left. With today's three-save shutout, Scanlon has now registered four clean sheets this season. Block made three saves as well for the Skyhawks.
Stonehill outshot the Penmen 17-9 in the contest, including 10-3 in the first half. The Skyhawks also held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Stonehill (6-3-1, 4-2-1 NE-10) will be off tomorrow before returning to action on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Assumption College in the last of three home matches this week for the Skyhawks. Southern New Hampshire (5-5-1, 3-4-0 NE-10) is also back in action on Saturday, as the Penmen are set to return home to host Le Moyne College at noon.
