Junior forward Meagan Elliott's team-leading third goal of the season proved to be the game-winner in Stonehill's 1-0 victory over Pace this afternoon.

Junior forward Meagan Elliott nets game-winner in 83rd minute

EASTON, Mass. (September 13, 2014) – Junior forward Meagan Elliott (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute to lift Stonehill College to a 1-0 victory over Pace University this afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams at Skyhawk Field.

Senior midfielder Carolyn Moodie (Littleton, Massachusetts/Littleton) found Elliott in open space with her back to the goal well outside the 18-yard box with under eight minutes remaining in the scoreless contest. Elliott collected the ball, turned, and launched a shot that just cleared the outstretched arms of Pace freshman goalkeeper Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle & Cassidy).

The goal was Elliott's team-best third of the season, as she recorded two more earlier this week in Stonehill's 6-0 triumph over Molloy College. Moodie's assist was good for her team-leading third of the season as well.

Prior to Elliot's go-ahead score, Stonehill had several opportunities to take the lead but was unable to break through. In the 77th minute, sophomore forward Lauren Kapatoes (Hopedale, Massachusetts/Hopedale) had a solid header chance off a cross from sophomore back Claire O'Brien (West Hartford, Connecticut/Hall), but DeSousa was up to the task.

Three minutes later, Kapatoes had another opportunity to score on a header, this time off a corner kick by senior midfielder Jordan Bell (Pemberton, New Jersey/Holy Cross), but the ball ended up just wide of the net.

Stonehill sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) earned her second shutout of the week with her five-save effort. In three starts this season, Block has made 15 saves in 17 opportunities, good for a .882 save percentage and an 0.67 goals against average.

Stonehill (3-0, 1-0 NE-10) will look to extend its perfect start to the season on Wednesday afternoon, as the Skyhawks are set to host Saint Michael's College at 4 p.m. in an NE-10 tilt. Pace (1-3, 0-1 NE-10) returns home to take on American International College Wednesday at 4 p.m.
