Stonehill Cruises To 6-0 Victory Over Molloy In Home Opener

Junior forward Meagan Elliott scored twice in Stonehill's 6-0 victory over Molloy tonight.

Four Skyhawks score their first collegiate goal in Stonehill's highest scoring output since 2010

EASTON, Mass. (September 10, 2014) – Stonehill College scored twice late in the first half before erupting for four second half goals en route to a 6-0 shutout victory over Molloy College this evening in non-conference women's soccer action at Skyhawk Field.

After over 40 minutes of scoreless action, Stonehill broke through for the first of its six goals with just three minutes remaining in the first half. Senior midfielder Carolyn Moodie (Littleton, Massachusetts/Littleton) played a perfect header into the penalty area from the far sideline, which freshman midfielder Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic) then headed into the back of the net for the first goal of her collegiate career.

Less than two minutes later, the Skyhawks doubled their lead when junior forward Meagan Elliott (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) launched the ball towards the net from 30 yards out, beating Molloy freshman goalkeeper Paige Salmon (West Hempstead, New York/Kellenberg Memorial) with a shot inside the right post.

Stonehill continued with its offensive surge 20 minutes into the second half. Senior midfielder Maddie Manning (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) threaded a cross from the left side of the goal to junior forward Natalie Laurin (Chicopee, Massachusetts/Chicopee), who was open near the right post. Laurin slotted her first collegiate goal past Salmon, giving the Skyhawks a 3-0 lead in the contest.

Manning factored into Stonehill's next goal as well, as her corner kick in the 69th minute was headed into the back of the net by senior midfielder Kate Wegener (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton). Like Shannahan and Laurin, Wegener's goal was the first of her Stonehill career. The Skyhawks increased their lead to 5-0 just 22 seconds later, when Elliott capitalized on a Molloy turnover in the penalty area for her second goal of the contest. Elliott, who scored one goal as a freshman and one as a sophomore, doubled her career total with tonight's effort.

Freshman forward Meredith Moore (Salem, Connecticut/East Lyme) put the finishing touches on Stonehill's highest scoring output since 2010 with her goal in the 79th minute. Moore became the fourth Skyhawk to record their first collegiate goal in the contest when she won the ball from Salmon in the penalty area and fired the ball into the empty net.

Stonehill sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) made one save and recorded her first career shutout in just her second start in net. Block has made ten saves in 12 opportunities this season, and improved her record to 2-0 with tonight's triumph.

Stonehill's six goals was its highest total since defeating Nyack College, 7-0, in the 2010 home opener at Skyhawk Field on September 2nd. The Skyhawks also scored five times on three different occasions during the 2011 campaign.

Stonehill (2-0, 0-0 Northeast-10) will be back in action this weekend, as the Skyhawks are set to host Pace University at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the NE-10 opener for both schools. Molloy (0-3, 0-0 East Coast Conference) will look to pick up its first win of the season next Wednesday, when the Lions return home to face Caldwell University in the first of five consecutive home contests.
