Northeast-10 Preseason Poll Announcement

EASTON, Mass. (August  26, 2014) – Stonehill College has been picked to finish 11th in the Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer preseason poll, as selected by the league's 15 head coaches, the Conference office announced today.

Stonehill received 75 points, 21 more than 12th-place Pace University, and 24 fewer than 10th-place Saint Anselm College. Last season's conference champion, The College of Saint Rose, is favored to successfully defend its title after getting 191 points, including nine first-place tallies. American International College, a 2013 national semifinalist, finished second in the coaches' poll with 184 points, including five first-place nods. Adelphi University was picked to finish third with 163 points (one first-place vote), while the University of New Haven (160 points) and Merrimack College (136 points) rounded out the top-five.

Stonehill returns 23 letter winners from last year's squad, including its top-three goal scorers. Senior Megan Sullivan (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) led the team with four goals in 2013, three of which were game-winners. Classmate Renee Trudeau (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) ranked second with three scores, while 2013 NE-10 All-Rookie Team selection Lauren Kapatoes (Hopedale, Massachusetts/Hopedale) checked in third with two goals. Stonehill also returns a pair of key defenders, sophomore Claire O'Brien (West Hartford, Connecticut/Hall) and senior Danielle Sears (Cohasset, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy), who both started all 18 matches last fall.

Stonehill finished the 2013 campaign with a 5-11-2 record, including 5-8-1 in the NE-10. The Skyhawks opened conference play with three wins in their first four league contests, but finished the season four points shy of the final berth in the NE-10 Championship.

Stonehill is set to open the 2014 season next weekend at the Catholic Cup, hosted by Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. The Skyhawks will take on Assumption College at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon, before playing a second match on Saturday. Stonehill kicks off its home slate against Molloy College on Wednesday, September 10th at 4 p.m., and the Skyhawks open NE-10 play on Saturday, September 13th at 2 p.m. against Pace.
