Wheaton, Manning, and O'Brien named to All-New England Second Team
EASTON, Mass. (December 18, 2013) – Three members of the Stonehill College women's soccer team have earned Division II All-New England honors from the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA), it was announced yesterday.
Senior captain Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth), junior midfielder Maddie Manning (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth), and freshman back Claire O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) represent Stonehill on NEWISA's Second Team.
Wheaton posted a 1.49 goals against average and a .774 save percentage this season for Stonehill, which finished 5-8-1 in the Northeast-10 and 5-11-2 overall, narrowly missing out on the Northeast-10 Championship. Wheaton recorded two shutouts in 2013, coming in back to back games on September 21st against Le Moyne College and September 24th against Franklin Pierce University.
The senior kept the Skyhawks in nearly every match this season, as she allowed one goal or fewer in 11 of Stonehill's 17 contests in 2013. Wheaton made a season-best nine saves in Stonehill's 2-1 overtime victory against Southern Connecticut State University on October 19th, and she stopped eight shots on three separate occasions. Wheaton helped Stonehill get off to a 3-1-1 start in conference play by allowing only three goals in the team's first five NE-10 contests.
Both Manning and O'Brien were key members of Stonehill's starting unit this season, as O'Brien started all 18 matches as a freshman, and Manning started all but one contest for the Skyhawks.
Manning tied for fourth on the team with four points on one goal and two assists, including the assist that set up classmate Megan Sullivan's game-winning overtime goal against Southern Connecticut State. O'Brien was one of Stonehill's most consistent defenders all season, and the rookie was named to the inaugural Catholic Cup All-Tournament Team following the season-opening event hosted by Assumption College.
Last season, Wheaton and back Sara Nagle, '13, were honored by NEWISA, with Wheaton earning a spot on the First Team and Nagle landing on the Second Team for the third straight season to finish her career.
