EASTON, Mass. (November 2, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team rallied to tie the match in the second half, but allowed two late goals to visiting Adelphi University, as Stonehill fell today, 3-1, on Senior Day at Skyhawk Field in Northeast-10 action.

After dominating the possession battle for the majority of the first half, Stonehill allowed Adelphi to get on the board in the 41st minute following a turnover in the penalty area. Adelphi sophomore forward Giselle Ortiz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) ended up with the ball, and dished it to freshman midfielder Victoria Antonino (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) for her sixth goal of the season. Adelphi would carry its 1-0 advantage into the half.

Stonehill responded with the equalizer at the 59:52 mark, when sophomore midfielder Caroline Stone (Mount Vernon, N.H./Souhegan) raced past several Adelphi defenders up the left side of the field, and beat Adelphi junior goalkeeper Sam Whitney (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) for her first goal of the season. Stonehill then nearly took the lead in the 80th minute, when a shot by junior forward Renee Trudeau (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) clanked off the post.

Adelphi, however, would gain the late lead when Ortiz buried a shot into the top left corner of the net in the 85th minute, and then Ortiz added an insurance tally exactly four minutes later on an assist from Antonino to put the match out of reach for Stonehill.

In her final match in a Stonehill uniform, senior captain goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) made seven saves. Her counterpart, Whitney, stopped seven shots as well.

Today's match was the last for Stonehill seniors Wheaton, midfielder Casey Mathews (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional), back Jaemie Fasanello (East Bridgewater, Mass./Notre Dame Academy), and midfielder Catherine Kelly (Medfield, Mass./Medfield). Stonehill honored each player prior to the start of today's contest with a ceremony on the field.

Stonehill (5-11-2, 5-8-1 NE-10), which wrapped up its 2013 campaign with today's contest, ends the season in tenth place in the Northeast-10 standings with 16 points. The Skyhawks finished just four points shy of Franklin Pierce University, which earned the final postseason berth. Adelphi (11-1-4, 9-1-4 NE-10) will compete in the Northeast-10 Championship, which begins next week.
