Skyhawks become first NE-10 squad to score on Golden Knights in 2013
ALBANY, N.Y. (October 26, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team led the #3 nationally-ranked Saint Rose Golden Knights for over 35 minutes, before the powerful Saint Rose offense found its groove and scored three unanswered goals, defeating Stonehill 3-1 today in Northeast-10 play at Sullivan Field.
Stonehill began its toughest match of the season against the vaunted Saint Rose defense by scoring just 46 seconds into the contest. For the second time in as many games, junior forward Renee Trudeau (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) found the back of the net, this time following a cross from classmate Megan Sullivan (Sutton, Mass./Sutton).
Trudeau scored the overtime game-winner for Stonehill on Tuesday against Bentley, after the Skyhawks trailed in the waning moments of that contest. With her two goals this week, Trudeau now has three on the season.
Coming into today's match, Saint Rose had outscored its conference opponents 20-0. With Trudeau's tally, Stonehill became the first Northeast-10 squad in 2013 to penetrate the Saint Rose defense and avoid a shutout. The goal was just the second that the Golden Knights have allowed this season, as they have outscored opponents 41-2.
The Skyhawks were able to keep Saint Rose off the scoreboard for the majority of the first half, but the home team finally struck in the 37th minute, when freshman forward Emily Meeks (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw) scored directly on a corner kick to knot the score at 1.
Saint Rose then took the lead under three minutes later, when sophomore midfielder Nicole Shively (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) found senior midfielder Sydney Bond (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) for her tenth marker of the season. The Golden Knights added an insurance goal in the 87th minute by sophomore Kristin Carr (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) to wrap up the scoring.
Stonehill senior captain Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) made six saves in net, while Saint Rose's Jessica Gerski (Harbor City, Calif./Bishop Montgomery) stopped two shots.
Stonehill (5-9-2, 5-6-1 NE-10) will return to Easton for its final two matches of the 2013 regular season, beginning with a match against Saint Anselm College on Wednesday afternoon. The Skyhawks then wrap up their home slate next Saturday at Skyhawk Field against Adelphi University. Saint Rose (14-0-2) will put its undefeated record on the line this Wednesday, when it hosts New Haven in Albany.
