Sullivan scores third game-winner of 2013
EASTON, Mass. (October 19, 2013) – On the strength of two goals by junior forward Megan Sullivan (Sutton, Mass./Sutton), the Stonehill College women's soccer team snapped its six match winless streak, defeating Southern Connecticut State University in overtime by a 2-1 margin today at Skyhawk Field in Northeast-10 play.
Sullivan gave Stonehill a 1-0 advantage on her third goal of the season at the 33:15 mark of the first half, with the help of an assist by sophomore forward Meagan Elliott (Norton, Mass./Norton). Southern Connecticut wasted no time in finding the equalizer, as junior forward Hannah Spreckley (York, England/Woodgate College) tied the contest just over four minutes later, and the score remained the same through the rest of regulation.
Sullivan, who was responsible for each of Stonehill's last two victories with her game-winning scores (September 21st against Le Moyne, and September 24th against Franklin Pierce), was the hero again today, as the junior netted the winner five minutes into overtime.
Senior captain Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) was excellent in net despite allowing a first half tally to the Owls, making nine saves in Stonehill's thrilling victory. On the other side, Southern Connecticut senior keeper Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass./Andover) stopped four shots.
Stonehill (4-8-2, 4-5-1 NE-10) will look to build on today's win this Tuesday, when Bentley University visits Skyhawk Field in NE-10 action at 3:30 p.m. Following that match, the Skyhawks will be on the road for their toughest match of the season, a matinee next Saturday at #4 Saint Rose. Southern Connecticut (5-8-1, 4-6-1 NE-10) will be dealing with the Golden Knights in its next match, as the Owls host the Golden Knights on Tuesday night.
