Skyhawks improve to 2-1 in Northeast-10 play

EASTON, Mass. (September 21, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team won its first home match of 2013, and second straight Northeast-10 contest today, defeating visiting Le Moyne College 1-0 at Skyhawk Field.

Shortly after entering the game as a substitute, Stonehill junior forward Megan Sullivan (Sutton, Mass./Sutton) scored in the 37th minute, beating several Le Moyne defenders to a loose ball in the penalty area and firing a shot past Dolphins goalkeeper Kayla Werthmann (Macomb, Mich./Chippewa Valley) just inside the far post to stake Stonehill to a 1-0 advantage. Sullivan provided an offensive spark off the bench for the Skyhawks, as she was responsible for three of Stonehill's seven shots on goal.

Senior captain Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) benefited from strong defensive play by Stonehill, as the goalkeeper only needed to stop two shots to secure the shutout this afternoon. Wheaton did make a spectacular save in the first half, diving to stop a shot by Le Moyne midfielder Lindsey Bakal (Newark Valley, N.Y./Newark Valley) nine minutes into the match.

Stonehill will be busy this week, as it will first host Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday, looking for a third straight NE-10 victory. The Skyhawks then hit the road on Thursday for a non- conference match at the University of Bridgeport, and play a third contest of the week on Saturday at the University of New Haven in NE-10 play.
