Stonehill Picks Up First Win Of 2013, 2-1, Over Saint Michael’s

Junior Maddie Manning scored her first goal of the season against Saint Michael's.

Skyhawks ride two early goals to conference victory

Colchester, Vt. (September 18, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak by winning its first match of the 2013 campaign, defeating Northeast-10 rival Saint Michael's College, 2-1, tonight at Duffy Field. The win also serves as the first career victory for head coach and Stonehill alum Alex Wilson, who was a goalkeeper for the Skyhawks from 2004-07.

Freshman forward Lauren Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) tallied her first career goal in the ninth minute when senior captain Catie Kelly (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) found her following a rebound in front of  the Saint Michael's net.

Junior midfielder Maddie Manning (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) put the Skyhawks up 2-0 in the 17th minute, scoring on a breakaway after the Saint Michael's defense misplayed a high bounce, leaving Manning alone with Purple Knights keeper Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich).

Alex Wilson ('08) picked up her first win as head coach of her alma mater.

The 2-0 advantage would prove to be enough for Stonehill captain goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth Mass./Dartmouth), who made seven saves in the win. Saint Michael's did break through in the 83rd minute when freshman Michaela Horne (Southboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) beat Wheaton to make the score 2-1, but that was all the Purple Knights would muster.

Stonehill (1-3-1, 1-1-0 NE-10) will try to build on tonight's win this Saturday, when it hosts Le Moyne College at 2 p.m. in a conference clash. Saint Michael's (0-4-0, 0-2-0 NE-10) will be looking for its first win of the season when it welcomes Assumption College to Colchester Saturday at 2 p.m.
