Wheaton earns second All-Region selection of the season with spot on second team
Nagle named to NSCAA All-East third team for second straight All-Region nod
EASTON, Mass. (December 6, 2012) – Two key cogs in the Stonehill College women's soccer team's defensive excellence have been recognized with All-East Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Junior goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth), who earlier was named to the Daktronics All-East Region first team, receives her first NSCAA All-Region selection with a spot on the second team. Senior back Sara Nagle (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) earns NSCAA All-Region honors for the second-straight year with her third team selection.
Wheaton, the Northeast-10 Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and first team All-Conference member, earns second team All-Region honors from the NSCAA after serving as the backbone to the Stonehill defensive unit this fall. She posted eight shutouts in 17 starts this, with a 0.65 goals against average, 96 saves and an .889 save percentage. Wheaton led the NE-10 this season for save percentage (8th nationally), while ranking second for shutouts, third for goals against average (27th), four for minutes played (11th) and seventh for total saves (43rd).
Wheaton has played 43 games (39 starts) over her career at Stonehill and turned away 211 shots (4.9/match), recording a 0.75 GAA in nearly 4,000 minutes in net. The junior goalkeeper has compiled 15 career shutouts which ties her for fourth all-time on the career shutouts list at Stonehill. Wheaton also ranks third and fourth, respectively, on the single-season goals against average list with a 0.65 GAA mark in 2012 and a 0.72 GAA in 2011.
Nagle, who earned second team All-East Region honors from the NSCAA as well as Daktronics as a junior, was also named to the All-Northeast-10 second team this fall after anchoring Stonehill's back line. The three-time All-Conference pick never missed a match at Stonehill making 74-consecutive starts for Skyhawks. Stonehill's defense has registered a 0.94 team goals against average in 6,960 minutes over that time. Nagle played a key role for a defense that set a new single-season program record for fewest goals allowed with 12, ranking second in the NE-10 for team GAA (0.65) and fourth in shutouts (8).
Nagle, an NE-10 All-Rookie Team selection in 2009, has compiled numerous awards at the College both on the field and in the classroom. Nagle was chosen to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District second team as a junior and has also received two NCAA Division II ADA Academic Achievement awards and one NE-10 Academic All-Conference selection over her career. She is also a two-time NEWISA All-New England selection and participated in the NEWISA Senior Bowl at Merrimack College this past Sunday.
Stonehill posted a 6-5-6 overall record during the 2012 season, missing out on a spot in the NE-10 tournament by just a single point with its 5-5-5 Conference mark putting the Skyhawks in ninth place. Three of the Skyhawks five losses were by just one goal and the team played nine overtime matches, posting four scoreless double-overtime draws.
