Tarchini nets game-winner in 81st minute for Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 13, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team was handed a 1-0 loss by Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday night in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Jess Dow Field.

Senior midfielder/back Lisamarie Tarchini (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) potted the game-winning goal for the Owls in the 81st minute as she finished on a wide open shot over Stonehill junior goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) for her second goal of the season.

Junior midfielder/forward Suzane Pires (Sao Paulo, Brazil/International School of Stuttgart) set up the tally with a cross to a wide open Tarchini in the middle of the box.

Wheaton posted a game-high eight saves while Southern Connecticut freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Nickerson (Seaford, Va./York) turned away one shot in the win. Junior midfielder Casey Mathews (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) registered Stonehill's only shot on goal in the contest.

The Owls outshot the Skyhawks, 13-7, and slightly edged the visitors in corners, 2-1.

Stonehill (5-4-4, 4-4-3 NE-10) travels to Bentley University for an NE-10 clash on Tuesday, October 16 at 3:30 p.m. Southern Connecticut (7-3-3, 5-3-3 NE-10) visits The College of Saint Rose, the defending NCAA Division II national champions, on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
