Garcia deposits game-winner at 96:07 mark for New Haven

EASTON, Mass. (September 22, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team was handed its first loss of the season as the University of New Haven Chargers upended the Skyhawks, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Skyhawk Field in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action.

Freshman forward Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) netted her first-career goal at the 96:07 mark to finish off the Chargers come-from-behind victory. Garcia gathered a deflection off of a cross from the right flank inside the penalty area and beat Stonehill sophomore goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) in a scramble for the ball in front of the net for the win.

New Haven tied up the contest at 48:13 as Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) cleaned up Nicole Pacapelli's (West Haven, Conn./West Haven/Stonehill College) rebound from an indirect free kick from about 25-yards out near the right post for her second marker of the season.

Sophomore midfielder Maddie Manning (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) gave Stonehill an early 1-0 lead in the 18th minute as she one-timed a shot past Chargers sophomore goalkeeper Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) off of a deflection inside the box.

Purchla turned away three shots to improve to 2-0-1 overall. Wheaton stopped four shots for the Skyhawks (3-1-2).

Stonehill outshot New Haven, 16-10, while both teams tied in the corners category at three apiece on the afternoon.

The Skyhawks (3-1-2, 2-1-2) host Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday, September 26 at Skyhawk Field with game time scheduled for 4 p.m. The Chargers (6-1-1, 3-1-1 NE-10) welcome American International College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
