Hickey nets first-career hat-trick to guide Skyhawks

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 29, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team scored four goals in the second half en route to a 5-0 triumph over Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Stadium under snowy weather conditions. The Skyhawks (10-6-2, 8-5-2 NE-10) will play Southern Connecticut State University (10-4-3, 8-4-3 NE-10) in the NE-10 Tournament Quarterfinal round on Tuesday, November 1 at Southern Connecticut at a time to be determined later.
Senior goalkeeper/forward Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) netted her first-career hat-trick to guide the Skyhawks offensively while sophomore forward Caitlin Martell (Randolph, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) and freshman midfielder Victoria Hendel (Cheshire, Conn./Mercy) also added markers.
Hickey opened up the scoring at 7:46 flicking Allison Nagle's (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) free kick into the back of the net past Greyhounds goalkeeper Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) for a 1-0 advantage and her second goal of the season.
In the second half, Stonehill exploded for four unanswered goals over a stretch of 25 minutes and 24 seconds to close out the contest.
Hickey jumpstarted the offense at 60:32 firing her second goal of the game into the lower right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead. After Martell put home a mishandled ball in the box by Edgin at 72:05, Hickey completed her hat-trick five minutes later (77:21) beating a defender one-on-one and slipping a shot into a wide open net.
Hendel capped the scoring outburst at 85:56 penetrating past the defense and ripping a shot into the lower right corner of the net behind backup goalkeeper Allison Bruder (Sandy, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) for a 5-0 gap and her first-ever collegiate goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) made eight saves in net for Stonehill while backup keeper Eileen Segreve (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) turned away one shot. For Assumption, Edgin stopped eight shots and Bruder made one save.
Stonehill outshot Assumption, 18-11, and won the corners matchup, 5-1.
The Greyhounds season concludes at 4-12-1 overall and 2-12-1 in the NE-10.
