Stonehill Blanks Franklin Pierce, 1-0

Hickey scores first-ever collegiate goal for game-winner

EASTON, Mass. (October 18, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team received an early first half goal and held on the rest of the way defensively for a 1-0 victory over Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Tuesday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.

Senior goalkeeper/forward Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) netted her first-ever collegiate goal at 23:51 firing home a loose ball in the box past Ravens goalkeeper Jocelyn Leon (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) into the lower right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Midway through this season due to an injury on the team, Hickey was moved to the forward position after posting a career record of 20-19-3 and 12 shutouts (numbers include this season) in goal for Stonehill.

Skyhawks goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) preserved the win and her sixth shutout of the year with four saves including three in the first half. Leon turned away one shot in net for Franklin Pierce.

Franklin Pierce held a slim, 9-8, margin in shots while both teams tied in corners at 1-1 apiece.

With the win, the Skyhawks snap a three-game regular season losing streak against the Ravens. Since 2002, Franklin Pierce has posted a 9-0-1 record against Stonehill – counting one NE-10 quarterfinal win in 2006 – with the Skyhawks only draw coming in the 2007 season.

Stonehill (9-4-2, 7-3-2 NE-10) hosts Le Moyne College on Senior Day at Skyhawk Field on Saturday, October 22 in a NE-10 matchup slated for 2:30 p.m. Franklin Pierce University (6-7-1, 4-7-1 NE-10) travels to Saint Rose on Saturday in a NE-10 contest starting at 2:00 p.m.
