Skyhawks Fall To #1 Bridgeport, 1-0, On The Road

Stanley deposits eventual game-winner off of a free kick in first half

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (September 28, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team fell to the University of Bridgeport, ranked first overall in the latest NCAA Division II National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National poll, 1-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday night. The Skyhawks, ranked fourth overall in the East Region by the NSCAA, received votes in the NSCAA National poll this week.

Senior midfielder Katie Stanley (Oxon, England/Oaklands College) lofted a free kick into the top right corner of the net past Stonehill goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) at 23:13 for a 1-0 lead and her third marker of the season.

Purple Knights goalkeeper Julia Hansson (Tockfors, Sweden/Tockfors) preserved the shutout turning away four shots, two in each half, for her sixth clean sheet of the season.

Wheaton made five saves in the loss for Stonehill including four in the second half.

Bridgeport outshot the Skyhawks, 12-5, but Stonehill held a slim, 2-1, advantage in corners.

The Skyhawks (7-2-1/5-1-1 NE-10) travel to Saint Rose (ranked #9 nationally) on Saturday, October 1 at 2:30 p.m. The Purple Knights (8-0-0/2-0-0 ECC) host the New York Institute of Technology on Saturday at 3 p.m.
