Martell scores twice to pace Stonehill past Caldwell

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (September 3, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team posted its second-straight non-conference shutout victory on Saturday afternoon defeating Caldwell College, 5-0.

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) turned away all six shots she faced and sophomore forward Caitlin Martell (Randolph, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) netted a pair of goals to lead the Skyhawks.

Sophomore Catherine Kelly (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) got Stonehill on the scoreboard early at the 5:28 mark of the contest taking an Alexandra Murphy (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) pass from 18-yards out and striking it behind Caldwell goalkeeper Robin Franchi (Sewell, N.J./Deptford) for a 1-0 advantage.

Martell wasted little time adding to the gap putting home her first of two markers at 8:34 on a nice feed from freshman midfielder Jordan Bell (Pemberton, N.J./Holy Cross) for a 2-0 score.

Kelsey Mahoney (Rehobeth, Mass./Dighton-Rehobeth) added a goal off of Casey Mathews' (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) initial shot at 16:09 to make it 3-0.

Moments later at 19:11, Mahoney returned the favor feeding Martell with a pass that the sophomore forward launched into the back of the net from 18-yards away.

Freshman forward Megan Sullivan (Sutton, Mass./Sutton) netted her second goal of the season, an unassisted tally, at 72:50 to round out the scoring for the Skyhawks.

Franchi made seven stops in net for the Cougars in the loss while Stonehill outshout Caldwell, 16-12, and won the corners match-up 5-2.

The Skyhawks return to action on Tuesday, September 6 on the road against Southern New Hampshire in their first Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) game of the season at 4 p.m. The Cougars travel to Holy Family on Saturday, September 10 at noon.
