St. Martin nets two; Wheaton posts first career shutout

EASTON, Mass. (October 8, 2010) – The Stonehill College women’s soccer team breezed to their second Northeast-10 Conference win of the week with a 4-0 victory over Assumption College at home on Friday.

Senior Kirstie St. Martin (Providence, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) tallied two goals and an assist, junior Kelsey Mahoney (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) added a goal and an assist, and senior Molly Mattern (Preston, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) netted her first goal of the season for the Skyhawks. Freshman goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) made six saves and posted a shutout in her second career start.

The Skyhawks got going in just the ninth minute as Mahoney collected a loose ball near the top of the box and drilled home a shot to the upper left corner to give Stonehill the early lead. Mahoney’s goal was the lone first-half score, as the Skyhawks would not put another shot on target in the period.

St. Martin came out swinging after the break, though, netting her first of the day two minutes into the second half off a cross from Mahoney. She struck again in the 57th minute, collecting a cross from senior Caitlin McEvily (New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline School), settling the ball in front of the net, and driving it between two Assumption defenders for her conference-leading 14th goal of the year.

In the 82nd minute, St. Martin took the ball into the box for another attempt and got tangled up with the goalkeeper and a defender near the right post. Unable to line up a shot, she dished the ball back out to senior Molly Mattern (Preston, Conn./Norwich Free Academy), wide open in front of the empty net, and Mattern tapped in her first goal of the season for the final 4-0 advantage.

Wheaton made two key saves in the final ten minutes, including a diving stop on a liner by freshman Andrea Bates (Holden, Mass./Wachusett), to wrap up her first career shutout and the Skyhawks’ fourth of the season.

Stonehill (7-4-1, 6-3-1 NE-10) next visits American International College on Sunday at noon. Assumption (2-8-1, 2-7 NE-10) hosts Saint Michael’s College on Sunday at 3 p.m.
