St. Martin nets lone goal to extend scoring streak for Skyhawks
MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 21, 2010) – Stonehill College had a two-game shutout streak halted by a 2-1 loss to Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 women’s soccer matchup Tuesday.
Senior Kirstie St. Martin (Providence, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) recorded Stonehill’s goal on a penalty kick, scoring in her sixth straight game, but Saint Anselm held on for the win behind goals from freshman Lindsay Johnson (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) and junior Teresa Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass./Sacred Heart), and eight saves by senior goalkeeper Jackie Cooney (Braintree, Mass./Braintree).
Saint Anselm put up the first tally in the 32nd minute, when senior Erika Sartor (Andover, Mass./Andover) set up Johnson at the top of the box for Johnson’s first career goal. St. Martin matched it on a penalty kick in the 50th minute to tie the score at 1-1, but the Hawks responded minutes later with Vercollone’s goal and a 2-1 lead which held up for the final 30 minutes.
Stonehill (5-3, 4-2 NE-10) next visits Southern Connecticut State University on September 25 at 4 p.m., and will return to Skyhawk Field on October 2 for an Alumni Weekend matchup against Saint Rose.
