Women's Lacrosse Stays Alive Against Saint Michael’s, 17-8

Healey and Hughes lead Skyhawks with five points apiece

EASTON, Mass. (April 24, 2019) – Stonehill College kept its postseason chances alive, using a six goal run to open the second half to fuel a 17-8 victory over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium tonight.

Junior Kaity Healey and sophomore Shannon Hughes each totaled five points as Stonehill saw eight different players score goals in the win. Hughes netted four goals and added an assist, while Healey registered three goals and two assists, with three draw controls. Junior Jennifer Wheaton contributed two goals and two assists, while junior Olivia Pino and freshman Kendall Fressle each recorded two goals and an assist. Pino also collected three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while freshman Emma Sullivan potted two goals and classmate Corinne Lewis chipped in with a goal and assist, with two caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Junior Bailey Grant preserved the win with 14 saves in the Stonehill goal. Sophomore Emily Sharretts collected six draw controls, four ground balls and a caused turnover, while classmate Liz Katsoulis totaled two caused turnovers and seven ground balls.

Sophomore Erin Mickson scored a team-high three goals for Saint Michael's, adding three draw controls and two ground balls. Senior Kate Martin also totaled three points with two goals and an assist, adding five caused turnovers, three ground balls and two draw controls. Sophomore Victoria Putnam finished with two saves in the Purple Knights goal.

Stonehill held onto a two-goal halftime lead (6-4) behind five different goal scorers in the first half, led by a pair by Hughes, who also dished out an assist. The Skyhawks opened the second half with six goals over the first seven minutes to open an eight-goal cushion (12-4), Healey bookended the run with a pair of goals, while Pino and Fressle also netted a pair. Pino scored back-to-back goals just 43-seconds apart during that stretch.

Saint Michael's responded with two-straight from junior Kaelyn Oliver and Mickson within a three-minute span and then added a third within a four-goal stretch by Mickson to quiet the run. Stonehill closed the game out by scoring four of the final five goals, however, capped by two-straight from Hughes in the final four minutes, while Wheaton also contributed a goal and assist.

Stonehill (8-8, 5-7 NE10) closes out the regular season at Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks need a win and Saint Anselm College loss to No. 16 University of New Haven to clinch a return to the NE10 Tournament for the 20th time in program history after a one-year absence. Saint Michael's (3-11, 1-11 NE10) closes out the season at top-ranked Le Moyne College on Saturday at noon.
