Women's Lacrosse Notches First NE10 Win Over AIC, 14-9

EASTON, Mass. (March 12, 2019) – Stonehill College picked up its first Conference win of the season with a 14-9 decision over American International College in Northeast-10 women's lacrosse action on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Junior Jennifer Wheaton played a role in nine of Stonehill's 14 goals, totaling a career-high nine points with five goals and four assists, while sophomore Shannon Hughes netted five goals, while adding two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Freshman Emma Sullivan contributed two goals and two assists, with four draw controls and two caused turnovers for the Skyhawks, while sophomore Emily Sharretts collected three caused turnovers, four draws and three ground balls.

Junior Bailey Grant and sophomore Kaleigh Wright split the goalkeeping duties for Stonehill with ten combined saves. Grant registered four saves in the first half, while Wright posted six second half stops for the Skyhawks. Junior Chelsea Davis finished with ten stops in the AIC goal, collecting six ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Senior Mikayla Demanche led AIC with three goals and two assists for five points. Senior Brittany Hutchison and sophomore Devin Coulter each netted two goals for the Yellow Jackets, with Coulter also collecting three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior Mary Bates chipped in with two assists and three ground balls.

American International grabbed an early lead as Demanche had a hand in the Yellow Jackets first two goals, setting up Hutchison's first of the day four minutes into the game and then scoring her first 51-seconds later for a 2-1 edge less than five minutes in.

Stonehill followed with a five-goal run to regain the lead and stretch it to four goals (6-2) with seven minutes to go after back-to-back goals by Wheaton, who also dished out an assist during the run, while Hughes potted a pair of free-position goals. The two teams traded goals before AIC scored the last two markers of the half to pull within two (7-5) at the half as Demanche and Coulter each scored within the last 30-seconds, separated by 19-seconds.

Stonehill was able to seal the win by scoring four of the first five goals in the second half, from four different players as Wheaton notched a goal and assist, to open a five goal lead (11-6) after Hughes' third of the day with 13:10 to play. AIC scored three more times in the final 13-minutes, but the Skyhawks answered each time, with Wheaton adding another goal and assist down the stretch.

Stonehill (4-1, 1-1 NE10) is back in action on Saturday, when it visits No. 1-ranked Le Moyne College for an NE10 matchup at noon. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, March 23, to host rival and No. 23 Bentley University for their Purple & White Game at W.B. Mason Stadium at noon. American International (1-5, 0-3 NE10) hosts Dominican (N.Y.) College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
