Women's Lacrosse Drops NE10 Opener at Assumption, 18-9

Hart and Reilly lead Greyhounds with four goals each

WORCESTER, Mass. (March 7, 2019) – Assumption College wrapped an eight goal run around halftime to break open a one goal lead on its way to an 18-9 victory over Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse opener for both at Multi-Sport Stadium this afternoon.

Seniors Kailyn Hart and Sarah Reilly each netted four goals, while Hart added an assist for five points to lead Assumption to the win. Hart also collected two ground balls, while Reilly had nine draw controls and a caused turnover for the Greyhounds. Junior Emily Spath posted a team-high six points with two goals and four assists, while classmate Jenny Bush netted three goals.

Sophomore Olivia Angelo and freshman Lauren Jakobs each dished out three assists for Assumption, with Jakobs also collecting four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Callie Dwyer and sophomore Helen Tautkus each chipped in with a pair of goals for the Greyhounds.

Freshman Allie Collins preserved the win with six saves in the Assumption goal. Junior Bailey Grant and sophomore Kaleigh Wright each finished with eight stops in the Stonehill goal.

Junior Jennifer Wheaton had a hand in six of Stonehill's nine goals with three goals and three assists, converting both free-position shot attempts, with a caused turnover. Freshman Emma Sullivan added four points with three goals and an assist, collecting three draw controls, while classmate Meghan Manzo netted a pair of goals. Junior Kaity Healey chipped in with a goal and assist, two draws and a caused turnover.

After trading goals over the first two-plus minutes, Assumption used a six goal run to open a 7-2 lead, with Tautkus bookending the run with her two goals in the contest, the second coming with 19:34 remaining in the first half. Hart also netted two goals during that stretch, while Spath dished out two assists.    

Stonehill followed with three-straight goals within a span of six minutes to close back within two (7-5) after Wheaton's first goal of the game with 12:56 remaining. Healey and Sullivan also scored for the Skyhawks. Hart broke up the run with her third goal of the half with 7:44 remaining, but Wheaton set up goals from Sullivan and Manzo within a 54-second span to close the gap to a goal (8-7) with 4:38 remaining in the half.

Assumption proceeded to wrap an eight goal run around halftime to break the game open. Bush scored twice as the Greyhounds closed out the opening frame with four goals in the final 3:24, while Hart and Spath notched a goal and assist and Jakobs doled out two assists during that span. Reilly netted the first three goals of the second half, the first just ten-seconds in, as Assumption scored the first four of the frame to open a 16-7 lead with Dwyer's second of the day with 13:30 remaining.

Wheaton scored the next two goals to pull Stonehill within seven (16-9) with four minutes to go, but Assumption would answer those goals in the closing 2:20 to round out the scoring.

Stonehill (3-1, 0-1 NE10) returns to action on Tuesday, when it hosts American International College at W.B. Mason Stadium at 3:30 p.m. Assumption (3-0, 1-0 NE10) visits Mercy College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
