Snelling and Doherty spark Skyhawks comeback in must win game on Senior Night

EASTON, Mass. (April 17, 2018) – Stonehill College rallied from a four goal deficit ten minutes into the second half to claim a huge 14-12 triumph over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Senior Night at Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium tonight.
Senior Brianna Doherty (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) totaled five points with two goals and three assists, while junior Logan Snelling (Duxbury, Massachusetts/Duxbury) netted four goals and contributed two draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover to lead Stonehill to the key win. Freshman Shannon Hughes (Franklin Square, New York/Kellenberg Memorial) added two goals and two assists, with a draw, two ground balls and a caused turnover, while classmate Olivia Pino (North Andover, Massachusetts/North Andover) and junior Linna Jalinskas (Farmington, Connecticut/Farmington) each tallied three goals.
Sophomore Bailey Grant (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) kept Stonehill in the game with ten saves, including six in the first half, while senior Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic) contributed seven caused turnovers, eight ground balls and four draw controls for the Skyhawks. Freshman Emily Sharretts (Derry, New Hampshire/Pinkerton Academy) chipped in with three caused turnovers, three ground balls and two draws. Junior Zoie Cavotta (Saratoga Springs, New York/Saratoga Springs) finished with six saves in the Saint Anselm goal.

Junior Molly Beck (Old Saybrook, Connecticut/Old Saybrook) netted a team-high four goals for Saint Anselm, while collecting seven draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior Erica Mattila (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) added three goals, seven draws and two ground balls, while sophomore Breda Holland (Londonderry, New Hampshire/Londonderry) totaled two goals and an assist with three ground balls. Senior Meaghan Sheehy (Wilmot, New Hampshire/Proctor Academy) also contributed three points with a goal and two assists, while classmate Emma Palumbo (Sudbury, Massachusetts/Lincoln-Sudbury) chipped in a pair of goals.
Stonehill trailed by four (11-7) with 19:30 remaining after back-to-back free-position goals from Beck and Mattila just 37-seconds apart. The Skyhawks responded with a six goal run over an eight minute span to grab a two-goal lead (13-11) after Jalinskas' third goal of the half, and her second of the run, both assisted by Doherty, with 8:13 remaining. Snelling netted three goals during the run, including consecutive markers separated by just 66-seconds that pulled the Skyhawks even with 9:51 remaining and then put them in front for good with 8:45 to play.
Beck drew Saint Anselm back within a goal with another free-position goal with 4:42 on the clock, but Stonehill wouldn't relinquish the lead. Doherty capped her senior night with her 15th goal of the year with six seconds to play to seal the win.
Stonehill scored the first four goals of the night, including two by Pino, over the first 11:20, but Saint Anselm reeled off seven straight to close out the half and take a 7-4 lead into the intermission, before stretching the run to eight goals when Beck scored off a Sheehy feed 1:32 into the second. Holland had two goals and an assist during the first half run for the Hawks, while Palumbo added a pair.
Stonehill (6-7, 5-6 NE10) returns to action on Saturday, when it visits No. 20 University of New Haven at 1 p.m. Saint Anselm (8-6, 6-4 NE10) hosts top-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
