Mallery leads Pioneers to non-conference win with seven goals

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 31, 2018) – LIU Post, ranked No. 6 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Division II polls, staked out an 11-3 lead at the half on its way to a 16-6 victory over Stonehill College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium today.

Sophomore Alyssa Mallery (Wantagh, New York/Seaford) paced the LIU Post attack with a game-high seven goals, while collecting four draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore Angela Deren (Greenlawn, New York/Harborfields) totaled five points with a goal and four assists, while classmate Jill LoManto (Miller Place, New York/Rocky Point) added a goal and three assists. Sophomore Paige Sherlock (West Islip, New York/West Islip) netted three goals, with six draws, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior Trish Brisotti (Mattituck, New York/Mattituck) and sophomore Brianna Feldman (Ponte Vedra, Florida/Ponte Vedra) each chipped in with a pair of goals for the Pioneers.

Senior Olivia Kirk (Farmingdale, New York/Farmingdale) finished with 11 saves in the LIU Post goal, including seven in the second half, while sophomore Bailey Grant (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) registered two saves over the first 39:44 in goal for Stonehill. Freshman Kaleigh Wright (Westborough, Massachusetts/Westborough) made one stop over the final 20:16 in making her collegiate debut for the Skyhawks.

Senior Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic) netted a pair of goals to lead the Stonehill attack, while adding two draw controls and a ground ball. Junior Logan Snelling (Duxbury, Massachusetts/Duxbury) added a goal and six draw controls, with a caused turnover, while classmate Linna Jalinskas (Farmington, Connecticut/Farmington) chipped in a goal and two ground balls. Freshman Shannon Hughes (Franklin Square, New York/Kellenberg Memorial) contributed three ground balls, a draw and two caused turnovers.

LIU Post scored the first five goals of the game, including three from Sherlock, and never looked back. Shannahan broke up the opening run with her first goal of the day with 11:32 remaining in the first half, and then Jalinskas scored with 6:14 on the clock after Mallery's second of the game to draw Stonehill within four (6-2). The Pioneers scored five of the last six goals in the opening frame, including the last three over the closing 1:42, to open an eight-goal lead (11-3) at the intermission. Feldman scored two goals and Deren recorded a goal and assist for the Pioneers during that stretch.

Senior Lauren Smith (Westhampton Beach, New York/Westhampton Beach) scored 66-seconds into the second half for Stonehill to open the scoring over the final 30-minutes. Mallery answered with four-straight goals, and then Brisotti capped a five-goal LIU Post run with her second of the afternoon with 9:44 remaining that opened a 12-goal margin (16-4), before Stonehill grabbed two late markers to pull back within the final ten goal margin.

Stonehill (4-5, 3-4 NE10) returns to action on Wednesday, when it visits Queens (N.Y.) College for a non-conference matchup at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, April 14, to host No. 2 Adelphi University at 1 p.m. LIU Post (7-2, 3-0 ECC) hosts the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
