Shannahan collects All-Region honors for first time

EASTON, Mass. (May 12, 2017) – Two members of the Stonehill College women's lacrosse program have been named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II All-North Region team as selected by the organization's head coaches, it was announced today.
Senior All-American Cara Corvino (Dorset, Vermont/Burr and Burton Academy) earned All-North Region honors from the IWLCA for the third straight year with her second team selection, while junior midfielder Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic) is an All-North Region honoree for the first time in her career by earning third team honors.
Corvino, also a three-time All-Northeast-10 Conference selection with first team honors for the second straight year this spring, has been voted to the IWLCA's All-North Region second team after being named to the first team as a junior and third team her sophomore season. She was the leader of a defensive unit this season which ranks third in the NE10 with a 9.17 team goals against average, holding ten of their 19 opponents under ten goals. Corvino started all 19 games for Stonehill, totaling a team-high 37 caused turnovers (3rd NE10), with 37 ground balls, while adding a goal and assist for two points and 19 draw controls.

Corvino, an IWLCA All-America second team selection last season, started 58 of her 75 career games played and totaled 131 ground balls, 87 caused turnovers and 61 draw controls over her four seasons. Her 37 caused turnovers this season rank fifth on the program's all-time single-season list. Corvino has been named to the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll four semesters and Athletic Director's Honor Roll once for her work in the classroom.
Shannahan, who earned All-NE10 honors for the first time in her career with third team honors this spring, collects IWLCA All-Region honors for the first time with her selection to the third team. A two-sport student-athlete at Stonehill who helped lead the women's soccer program to its first NE10 Championship in 22 years and its first NCAA Tournament bid in program history last fall, started all 19 games for the lacrosse program in the spring. She leads the NE10 with 66 ground balls – finishing just one shy of the program's single-season record set by Colby Confer '05 in 2003, while ranking second on the team with 24 caused turnovers (9th) and collecting 24 draw controls. Shannahan led the Skyhawks with 11 assists, while netting 22 goals to rank fourth on the team with 33 points. She recorded at least a point in 16 of Stonehill's 19 games this season, including five straight to wrap up the year, netting a career-high four goals against No. 6/13 NYIT on April 22.
Shannahan, who received the Stonehill Athletic Department's "Breakout Junior Award" at its recent Awards Night, has started 40 of her 55 career games played in three seasons and enters her senior year with 37 goals and 17 assists for 54 career points, adding 113 ground balls, 46 draws and 43 caused turnovers. She has been named to the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll four semesters for her work in the classroom. Shannahan started 20 of 22 games for the women's soccer team last fall, totaling a goal and three assists for five points. She earned NE10 All-Rookie Team status for soccer as a freshman.
Stonehill, ranked 16th in this week's IWLCA Division II poll and 20th in the final regular season Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Division II poll, wrapped up its season with a 12-7 record overall, including a 10-3 mark in the NE10. The Skyhawks reached the semifinal round of the NE10 Tournament for the 18th time in 19 years and are the lone program to appear in every NE10 women's lacrosse tournament.
