Vetter nets game winning goal with two seconds left in overtime
EASTON, Mass. (March 24, 2016) – Stonehill College, ranked 15th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, earned its second Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) victory of the season with a 9-8 overtime triumph over Saint Anselm College on Thursday night at W.B. Mason Stadium.
Junior Elizabeth Vetter (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) led the Skyhawks offensively with three markers including the game winning goal in the second half of overtime, while senior Caitlin Sweeney (Hollis, New Hampshire/Hollis-Brookline) added four points on two goals and two helpers. Classmate Rebecca Matheson (Reading, Massachusetts/Reading Memorial) had a goal and one assist, while sophomore Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic), junior Kiki Ryan (Salem, Connecticut/East Lyme) and freshman Linna Jalinskas (Farmington, Connecticut/Farmington) all tallied one goal.
For Saint Anselm, seniors Erin Marshall (Woburn, Massachusetts/Woburn Memorial) and Caitlin Villareal (Portsmouth, Rhode Island/Portsmouth Abbey) combined for eight points, as both players registered three goals and an assist. Sophomore Erica Mattila (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) and senior Michelle Kudlate (Waltham, Massachusetts/Waltham) each recorded a goal.
Sophomore goaltender Kaitlyn Hess (Guilderland, New York/Guilderland) earned the win (3-2-0) making four saves for the Skyhawks. Senior starter Jane Bunn (St. Johns, Florida/Creekside) dropped to 2-2-0 overall on the season making six saves.

Stonehill jumped out to an early 6-2 run highlighted by two Sweeney goals, including a successful free position attempt (10:58). After the Skyhawks added a seventh goal tobegin the second half, Saint Anselm responded with five-straight goals to take tie the game at seven goals apiece. Marshall and Villareal led the charge, scoring all five goals during the stretch.
Stonehill regained the lead with three minutes left to play in the game when Vetter scored her seventh goal of the season. Saint Anselm didn't take long to answer, as Kudlate scored just eight second later to re-tie the game at eight. After neither team could find the back of the net in the first half of overtime, they moved to the second to decide a winner. Vetter played the hero as she completed her hat trick with just two seconds remaining in the overtime period, sending the Skyhawks off with a victory.
Stonehill controlled possession throughout the game posting a 23-10 advantage in groundballs. Saint Anselm compiled a game-high 11 draw controls and caused 14 turnovers. Stonehill outshot the Hawks, 23-15. The Skyhawks converted nine of their 11 clear attempts while Saint Anselm went 7-for-9 in clear attempts.
Stonehill (3-2, 2-1 NE-10) returns to action Wednesday afternoon at the University of New Haven in a NE-10 matchup beginning at 4 p.m. Saint Anselm (2-2, 1-2 NE-10) takes on Franklin Pierce University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
