Ramzi posts 12 saves and Hawks break halftime deadlock with five straight second half goals
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 22, 2015) – Saint Anselm College, among teams receiving votes in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, outscored Stonehill College, ranked 7th in both the IWLCA poll and Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Top 20, 5-2 in the second half to grab an 8-5 triumph in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Grappone Stadium tonight.
Senior goalkeeper Allee Ramzi (Cumberland, Rhode Island/Mount Saint Charles) made 12 saves in the Saint Anselm net, while classmate Marissa Daly (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy) paced the Hawks attack with three goals, including two straight early in the second half to help break the game open. Saint Anselm posted a 22-5 advantage in shots, was successful on 15 of-16 clear attempts and scored on 2-of-4 free-position shot attempts.
Junior Caitlin Villareal (Portsmouth, Rhode Island/Portsmouth Abbey) added two goals for Saint Anselm, while seniors Kaiitlyn Stazinski (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Milton Academy) and Sarah Doherty (Franklin, Massachusetts/Franklin) each contributed a goal and assist. Stazinski also collected two ground balls, a draw control and caused turnover, while junior Erin Marshall (Woburn, Massachusetts/Woburn Memorial) tallied a goal and assist with two caused turnovers and a ground ball.
Senior Brooke Rudden (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) led Stonehill with a goal and two assists for three points to go with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior Caitlin Sweeney (Hollis, New Hampshire/Hollis-Brookline) netted two goals for the Skyhawks, while sophomore Elizabeth Vetter (Great River, New York/East Islip) tallied a goal and a game-high eight draw controls with a ground ball. Junior Rebecca Matheson (Reading, Massachusetts/Reading Memorial) chipped in with a goal.

Rudden's two assists this evening give her a career-high 40 for the season to move into second place on Stonehill's all-time single season list behind just Jenny McGrath '06 who dished out a school-record 66 assists in 2006. Rudden's 89 career assists ranks sixth in program history. Senior Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Massachusetts/Algonquin Regional) finished with three saves in the Skyhawks cage, including one on a free-position shots, and remains two wins shy of the program's all-time record of 47 by Stonehill Athletics Hall of Famer Lauren Stone '06.
The teams went into halftime deadlocked at three after Stonehill scored twice in the final 9:22 of the opening half to pull even. Saint Anselm scored the first five goals of the second half to take charge, netting three goals in the first ten minutes alone. Villareal opened the second half scoring with her first goal of the contest 2:08 into the half. Daly followed with two straight goals within a four minute span to push the Hawks lead to three goals with 20:15 remaining.
Villareal added her second goal of the game off a feed from junior Katie McKenna (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) to extend the Saint Anselm lead to four goals with 17:17 left and then Marshall gave the Hawks a game-high five goal lead (8-3) with an unassisted tally with 14:01 on the clock. Stonehill got goals from Sweeney and Rudden in the last 8:15, with Rudden's marker coming with four seconds left, but it was too little too late.
Saint Anselm scored the first two goals of the game to stake out a two goal cushion less than seven minutes into the contest. Sweeney stemmed the tide initially for Stonehill with her first goal of the afternoon with 19:35 left in the half, but Stazinski restored the Hawks two goal lead with an unassisted score with 15:52 on the clock. Stonehill rallied with a pair to equalize before halftime. Rudden set up both goals from Matheson with 9:22 to play and then Vetter's marker with 4:30 left.
Stonehill (13-3, 10-3 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it closes out the regular season at W.B. Mason Stadium with a big regional clash with No. 9/10 LIU Post for Senior Day at noon. Saint Anselm (8-6, 7-5 NE-10) visits Assumption College for its NE-10 finale on Saturday at 1 p.m.
